need help with where to go, on a modest budget....
12 years ago, May 31st 2011 No: 1 Msg: #137547
We are starting to plan a trip for the summer of 2012. Only 4 weeks. Thats all we can allocate at this time. The problem is, we dont know where to go! And we have a very modest budget. We have 4 children: 3 girls ages 16, 15, and 12 and 1 boy who is 9. With the exception of my eldest daughter and myself, our family is new to international travel. My daughter and I volunteered for 3 weeks in Tanzania last year and spend a few days in Uganda to go white water rafting.
I am thinking Southeast Asia, due to the fact that it is probably the cheapest. Also considering South America for the same reason.
Any tips/ suggestions on where to go, and how to do this the most cost effective way possible?
Thanks so much for your help! Reply to this

With a family of 6 I would think SE Asia would be the cheapest..and you should have no trouble booking accom in that time frame. Im not sure where you are located but if you can get cheap flights to SE Asia then im sure you will find somewhere to your liking.

From where I live in Perth Western Australia there are weekly deals for families of 4 with flights and accom to Bali for under $800AUD. Reply to this

Thanks for the reply! I am leaning towards Southeast Asia. We live in Canada so im not sure if we are going to be able to find cheap flights or not. I am just starting to look at that. Any country in particular that you think i should consider? Should i just stick to 1 country or try to do 2? Reply to this

Thailand is probably the most family friendly country in SE Asia. There is a variety of stuff to do depending on your interests e.g. beaches, cities, history, jungle. It's easy to get around and hotels are reasonably priced. Reply to this

Id second Thailand - much cleaner than Bali which is full of ..aussie families and aussie drunken end of schoolies as we call them.

In four weeks why not have a look around the north of Thailand for seven days, south for seven days and grab a cheap airfair (Ive gotten $1 flights from Bangkok to Ho Chi Minh City - what is the name of that airport!- and a $5 flight to Phnom Penh with air asia) to either Vietnam or Cambodia for 7 days? Malaysia's Sabah or Sarawak are nice considerations as well. Reply to this

Thanks again for the replies! I really would love to visit 2 countries, but just wasnt sure the ease or cost of the airfares, and which 2. I am learning lots from this site though! Do you think Cambodia or Vietnam would be a better 2nd country to add to Thailand considering our family and the ages? Reply to this

i've never been to thailand but i love their culture. i like martial arts and thailand produces some of the best in the world. they have such rich culture. i'd love to go. if i were you, i'd try for thailand by itself. that way you could spend plenty of time touring without having to rush yourselves. soak it all in and really immerse yourself in what it has to offer while you're there. Thailand is bigger than you might think and it is easy to spend a month there. Plus traveling with the kids you will want a few days at a beach or enjoying a hotel pool.

Recommendation for Bangkok- you will need 3 or 4 days
Temples, temples, temples, floating market, weekend market
We went to Thai boxing and it was excellent. I'll bet the kids would love this experience

Our favorite place in Thailand is Kanchanaburi- you'll need 3 days
The kids will get a good history lesson while here and enjoy a small countryside town.
Hellfire pass, War museum, Bridge over rive Kwai, waterfalls, hot springs and tiger park
This is where we took an inexpensive Thai cooking class.

You can get to Kanchanaburi via 3rd class train from Bangkok inexpensively.

Take the train to Chaing Mai-- you may want to stop in Ayuttahaya- 1 night in ayuttahaya- 5 to 7 nights in Chaing Mai
Temples, temples, temples, butterfly farms, Visit the LongNeck people, Elephant nature center, snake shows are rather circus like but fun, night market

Phuket or some beachy location- 3 to 5 days
swimming, diving, parasailing
You could hire a longboat and go island hopping

Thailand is the most developed country in Asia so it will offer ease of moving around with the kids. In Bangkok, there is a mall if they need to shop

If you are going to go to a second country I would go to Laos--- but only if you have a week minimum
You'll need 3 days in Luang Prabang
2 night in Vang Vieng
3 nights in Vietianne

If you go to Cambodia-- you'll want 3 or 4 days in Phnom Penh and 3 days in Siem Riep
That is a bare minimum.

I travelled to Cambodia and Vietnam with my daughter when she was 2, and I was in Thailand 11 years ago. I think Siem Reap/Angkor Wat is a MUST SEE. I would skip Phnom Penh, though I have not been there. SE Asia is relatively small and so the difference in international flight and national flight is not too different in time and cost. You may want to consider

1. Bangkok 4 days
2. Beach/Islands of choice in Thailand 4-7 days
3. Siem Reap/Angkor Wat 4 days
4. Hanoi/Halong Bay 5-6 days
5. Either Northern Thailand, Southern/Mid Vietnam (HCMC, Hue, etc), more beaches/islands Thailand, other city/country of choice Reply to this

Both of these are good ideas. There is enough in Thailand to keep you busy and the kids interested for 4 weeks. I agree that Kanchanaburi is lovely as is Chiang Mai. Any of the beach islands with pools for the kids will be good too. Ko Samui and Ko Chang are lovely as are some of the smaller islands like Ko Jum. The bigger islands will have other things to do when you bore of the beach like jungle trekking and elephant riding.

However, flights are cheap if you want to go elsewhere. You know your own children - as to how 'templed out' they will get e.g. how happy they will be looking at sights like old temples for long periods of time. The temples at Angkor are amazing but I don't know how much I would have appreciated them aged 15.

South East Asia is hot and wet at that time of year so you will need to build in time to relax out of the heat in a pool or in some air conditioning. We visited Angkor after living in Thailand for over a year and it was still incredibly hot for us to walk around temples.

One thing to consider if you decide to go to Cambodia and/or Vietnam is the costs of visas. It will add up with six of you. It's usually about $50 each for the Vietnamese visa and $25 for the Cambodian visa. I don't know if it's lower for children as I don't have any!

Hope this helps

Kate

WOW! Thanks for the replies. Based on your responses, i think that we will explore Thailand solely. Seems like there is so much to see there! I think my kids will love it! Anybody know of any places that could accommodate our family together? as in, not just connecting rooms? We will be looking for something on a beach area as well. Thanks! Reply to this
