Hi Abi,
I wouldn't worry about using a phone whilst traveliing anymore, not when facebook and skype is accessible pretty much everywhere in the world right now and its a hell of a lot cheaper than using a phone. Reply to this

You can get local sim cards for each country you visit. It means your number changes regularly but it's pretty cheap.

Although Nathan is right about Skype and facebook. Reply to this

I don't know about now, cos I haven't lived in the uk for a while, but it used to be that if your phone was roaming (i.e. you were abroad) you had to pay if people called you, as well as the call out. This made it expensive. If you have a local sim you can find one where it's cheap to make international calls and/or free to receive calls from abroad so you avoid the high costs. For example, in Thailand and Vietnam it costs about a few pence to send a text message to the UK with a local sim. We keep in touch with our families via text message and then Skype. Then you have a phone that your Mum can call, shoudl she need to.

A local sim in Vietnam or Thailand costs about 2 quid and I top up about 4 quid a month.

keeping in touch with friends and family at home is pretty easy these days with the internet, for me I'm more worried about getting split up from a travel partner or getting lost in the middle of nowhere with a broken ankle or something. i traveled with global roaming from my home country (australia) last year for 6 months and I will never do it again, I came home to phone bills in excess of a grand. Much more afforadble to keep in touch with people via the internet. Reply to this

Use Skype whenever you can! If you don't have WiFi or need to be reached all the time I would suggest using Tellink roaming traveler sim card.<snip>
Great rates, free incoming calls and good quality. Data is expensive only use when really necessary!
