Cancelling/Postponing a trip

What happened? How did you deal with it?

I was suppose to leave today for my first trip ever, I was going to backpack Europe for three months solo. Last night I ended up in the hospital and am advised by my doctor to postpone the trip until I can have surgery. I am bummed out and having a hard time dealing with that fact that my plane is gone and I'm not on it.
I know I can pick this up in a month but it's still hard. I was able to cancel hostels/couchsurf requests and such with no problem. Had a little issue with the plane ticket but at least i'm getting half back (advice really think about getting insurance for cancelled trips even if you think nothing will happen)
Any advice? Reply to this

Hello Lorriann 😊

What rotton luck. This sucks! 😞

This is the sort of thing I have nightmares about before I travel. I used to wake up crying after dreaming that I could not go on my trips before every trip and stay upset for several minutes, until I realised it was just a dream. Then I would get up and check dates and double check flight tickets etc. I still have these nightmares, but at least when I wake up these days I realise it is just the same old dream that I always have, and I just go back to sleep.

I have had a couple of trips restricted or postponed, because of getting pregnant and then after a c-section. But, it was not so bad, because I at least didnt lose any money over either.

I suppose your doctor is right. Apparently, when the plane is landing or taking off it can be very uncomfortable for those with stiches. But, does it really have to mean you cant go? You could go but take it easy and get plenty of rest when you get there, couldnt you? But, too late to ask these questions I suppose.

So, you will go in a month then? At least you are going still. I know a guy whose lungs collapsed. His doctor told him he can never go on a plane again. He was devastated. He loved travel and felt his life might as well be over if he cant fly.

I dont have any advice about how you can feel better about the disappointment, because I think anyone would be horribly disappointed to find themselves in the situation you are in. All I can say is it won't matter at all in a year from now. You will still be a world traveller whether you start yesterday, or in a month from now.

I wish I could still go, but the issue is what is wrong might get worse when I'm over there and the doctor thinks it's best to have it taken care of here. I have surgery booked for April 22 so I'm planning on going early May. Reply to this

Have you chatted to your doctor about when you can go. Depending on the type of surgery, you might need a few weeks to get your energy up again. I'd be guided by them on this sort of thing. Better to delay it by a few weeks to be 100% recovered, then to go too early and feel physically unwell. Either way, the choice is still yours. Reply to this

Yeah it's a day surgery and the doctor said about 4 days recovery. So I plan on leaving about 13 days or so after the surgery which seems okay. But I have not bought the ticket yet, so we'll see. Reply to this

If it is day surgery your plans should be fine - I just assumed it was a few days worth in the hospital! Hope it all goes well.

Not sure what part of the world you are now, but during the Easter period the airlines usually release cheaper fares for flights during the remainder of the year. In Australia, they have just released a whole bunch of cheaply priced fares to Europe (last year it was fares to Asia amongst others). So keep scanning your favourite airline booking websites, there could be something good appearing any day now.

Flights to India were very cheap last May from Europe, but some would say the weather in many parts there is not ideal at that time. I went there last May. It was hot and humid in Mumbai, but certainly not uncomfortable enough for me to regret availing of that cheap ticket. Maybe, your trip will turn out to be a completely different one from what you originally planned. I got a very cheap flight to Thailand one May too. It was the rainy season there, but that did not hinder my travels at all.

One cool thing about surgery these days, is they often/usually use disolvable stiches, so you dont need to go back to have them removed. Makes a difference when you dont want to be stuck someplace waiting until you dont need the stitches anymore. 😊 Reply to this
