The Mystery of Madha - and Nahwa

Whats the point of this smaller, empty enclave within a even smaller, even emptier enclave?

I spotted this today and can't understand why on earth this would happen:

Apparently there was a complicated political agreement that put this in place - anyone know anything about it?

Anyone been there? Reply to this

This is fascinating - I found this as well:

Madha and Nahwa

where it says the following: "Madha (75 sq. km) is an Omani enclave within UAE territory, while Nahwa in turn is UAE land, completely surrounded by Oman and part of the Emirate of Sharjah. This rather complex border situation was definitively demarcated only in 1969. Nahwa only consists of a few houses, while most of Madha is uninhabited, making the necessity for this particular delineatory arrangement even more mysterious."

I think it would be interesting to travel there with someone who is fluent in Arabic in order to ask the locals why this situation has occurred. I would guess it involved the owners of different parts of land being loyal to different rulers - so one owner to Oman and the other to Sharjah.

The only explanation I could find was here:

Madha

which attributed it to the shifting of lands between rulers.

As for anyone travelling there, I found this external blog:

Arabian Enclaves and Counter-Enclaves

but unfortunately, there is no discussion about the reasons for this situation. Reply to this

Very weird. Once you have spoken to your journalist friend, please let us know the answer. I have friends in Dubai, so might ask them as well.
