Tell me/us about the first time you went on a journey/trip by yourself. Were you scared, nervous, excited, all of the above? And what made you decide to go on the trip alone in the first place? Reply to this

All of the above! I went alone because no-one else wanted to do it the way I wanted to do it. Call me selfish but I didn't want to constantly negotiate every leg of my trip with someone. And of course the best way to meet new people is to travel alone! People have said I'm brave but I don't see it. I'm having an absolute blast. Have made some great new friends and really learnt about myself, what I like, value and am capable of. I'm quite proud to be honest and finally feel truly ALIVE. 😊 I don't think I'd want to do a long trip with someone else. Short trips yes but that's different. Reply to this

Hello Lorriann 😊

I was just plain excited. I didnt even feel any fear at all. I was on an absolute high. My first trip alone as an adult was moving from a village in Ireland, to London, England. I wasnt even sure how it would be when I got there. I just wanted to go and try it all. I worked there for several months, then I met my ex and backpacked around Europe with him, for 4 months with the money I had saved in London. Then back to London by myself.

I went to London at first, because I did so badly in my High School final exams. I had had enough of education for a while. I went alone, because I wasnt going to wait for others to be ready to come with me. I did have a friend in London though, who I hung around with sometimes.

Well, if that makes a person selfish, then I am selfish too. 😊 Reply to this

I was 17 and I hitchhiked to Mexico. I was driving until my car died in Oregon. So my choice was to abandon the entire trip and go home to Canada or abandon the car and keep going. I chose the latter. I had a few scary events, but overall it was a fantastic experience. I realize now how stupid, but at the time I was supergirl!

I still travel solo quite often, and I love it. It was way easier to meet people, and like Stacey said, you don't have to negotiate with someone else, you get to do exactly what you want to do!

My next solo trip is Peru and Ecuador, and I can't wait. Reply to this

Hello

Nice to read this, I am going alone for 12 months in March, slightly scared, but reading this has helped!

Hello

I first travelled on my own nearly 11 years ago. It was through no choice because I couldn't find anyone to travel with (for the countries I really wanted to visit). Naturally, I was nervous about travelling on my own but the rewards and desires outweighed the initial fears. Since my first solo trip in Europe in 1999, the majority of the trips had been made on my own and I won't have it any other way! I think if I didn't travel on my own, I wouldn't have visited most of the countries I've now travelled to and probably had to compromise, which I'm not prepared to do.

Happy solo travels....I highly recommend it! Reply to this

Well, of course I have not travelled by myself or my daddy would get arrested.

Daddy's, first trip without people he knew was to Costa Rica studying monkeys for a month, though this was not really travelling alone. It did spark the travel bug. First time travelling alone was to Honduras for a couple weeks in 1995 before meeting up with a friend.....Incredible experience and met a lot of people, one German dude who I still keep in touch with and see. Also travelled alone in Indonesia/Australia for 3 weeks and it was awesome. Highly recommend it. Reply to this

Anxious, Excited, Scared ... but I was determined to go and it ended up really great. It made me feel more confident and the experience was just awesome. I also got to know myself better! It wasn't easy for me but I highly recommend it.

I went because I desperately needed some time to be alone. Reply to this

Yeah, determined is a feeling I have had about my travels, since the first one. I can tolerate lonliness, poverty, uncertainty and just about anything else, if it means I get to travel. Reply to this

The first time I traveled alone was a little strange to me, but then it changed and now it´s great because of all the new things you learn and experience. And it´s also very nice to travel with a good travel mate. Reply to this
