Buying AUS internal flights online from the UK

Having looked at Qantas, Jetstar, and VirginBlue, is there any hidden legislation that i may fall foul of when buying internal AUS flights online from the UK?
There's certainly a range of prices and ticketing options to consider. I'd imagine that the process is pretty similar to that here in the UK, with/without loads of extra hidden charges and card fees, or am i being too cynical of low-cost operators.

When i get to Australia in early March, i'll be flying into Melbourne, with a view to flying out to Cairns/Brisbane/Darwin or NewZealand the same day or early the following day. Some other questions though...........

1. Does it really benefit financially to book a domestic flight 3months in advance, or is it best to buy when over in Aus?

2. Do domestic flights sell out completely?

3. Are smaller airports better or worse to use for a first time visitor?

4. Is it best to wait 24hrs before taking an onward domestic flight just in case 'something' unexpected happens, such as delay, lost luggage, customs interrogation etc...etc...?

Hi Koyli,

The main thing to check is the departure and arrival airports - as with other lowcost airlines they can be in out of the way places. You'll probably have to pay for check-in luggage too, again standard these days.

I doubt in March that the flights would sell out, and taking an onward domestic flight the same day shouldn't be a problem. If luggage doesn't arriv the airline can forward it on to your next destination, and would probably courier it out to you.

Customs interrogation? What are you planning on sneaking into the country? ;-) Reply to this

Thanks JoTrouble,

I'll be sure to use the magnifying glass during the booking process, but will probably stay with flying from the big airports. Nice to know that if i go onward without my baggage, then it should follow PDQ. Defo not planning to sneak anything in past customs. Just the questions posed by embarkation cards you have to fill out before landing. I can read, but sometimes the questions are so badly worded, that i wonder whether they're trying to catch you out.

You can always check with the flight attendants. If in doubt, declare it. Reply to this

Hi Jo, could you also recommend if one should fly down various destinations and what would be the average cost in dollars.

Also, if its better to take the train or drive? And is that a cheaper option? If the variance is not much, I rather fly down so that the time I save can be spent on visiting various places.
