Filming in Iran using a CANON SLR - does this automatically mean "looking for trouble"?

Planning to got to IRAN in January (travelling on a German passport).
Just today I came across latest news about the three hikers held in Iran.

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/11/10/world/middleeast/10hikers.html?_r=1&hp

So now I am just a bit uncertain about the camera equipment I would like to bring with me. I don t want to be taken for a spy...

I want to spend some time in and around Yazd and also do some skiing. No revolutionary stuff really.

But I want to bring my SLR Canon 500d and would also like to use a tripod, as this camera is also a great toy for filming in HD quality. Of course I don t plan to shoot too much in Tehran, rather in the countryside. Just making good picters/videos, no politically sensitive stuff or anything ...

Anyone made experiences concerning photography or even shooting video in Iran?
Any good advice is most welcome :-)

Hello Thomas 😊

I would at least be careful about what you film. When I was in Iran, I met a guy who was arrested for taking photos of an anti US, Israel demonstration. They let him go pretty quickly, but I think that was lucky.

I dont think you would be arrested for filming skiing, or a few nice looking buildings, as long as they are not government buildings or prisons.

If you look at the blogs about Iran here on TavelBlog, you will see that taking some photos is allowed in Iran. Even the Iranian police are quite friendly towards tourists, so will be understanding about why you want to take tourist type photos. Other TravelBlog members have uploaded photos of Iran onto their blogs, so it is allowed to take photos in Iran.
