Colourful birdies

What are my chances of seeing ones in Brazil, like those in the following photos? I will be going down along the coast from Sao Paulo to Uruguay. Are they everywhere, or only in wildlife parks and zoos?

Hey mell!

I'm no expert but from what I've read about the birds we saw, they are generally found in tropical and subtropical rainforests from southern Brazil into northern Argentina. Those plush-crested jays are apparently quite common and they are very tame - when we saw them in Iguazu they were practically eating out of people's hands! So, with a bit of luck, you'll see that one anyway... Afraid I don't know much about the toucans, macaws or parrots... Reply to this

Hi there Mell!

One thing I can say: there aren't everywhere. All this pictures (except the one from Bonito) were taken in the Bird's Park, near the brasilian side of the Iguaçu Falls. It's like a zoo for birds, with huge cages where you can enter. That's why you can´t see the fences in the photos. Some of them, like the blue macaw, are almost extinct, and rarely you will see then easily in nature. Some others you can find in wildlife parks or natural preservation areas. It´s just a matter of lucky. Sometimes it's possible to see some macaws near the road the goes from São Paulo to the seaside. A friend of mine saw a toucan flying while he was driving in the countryside of São Paulo State. On the other hand, all the zoos have this birds.
Enjoy your trip!

We saw plenty of toucans and parrots in the wild in the Pantanal (which really isn't quite where you're planning to go) - you generally don't get quite so close though. We also saw hyacinth macaws in the Pantanal (they are labeled blue parrot above). In our blog Steaks & Shopping, Wine & Waterfalls! Any Questions? you can see our bird pics from the Pantanal and then our (much closer) pics from the bird park near the Iguaçu Falls!

I'll be thrilled, even if I see them from a distance. 😊

Yeah - they are definitely very cool! I am a huge fan of toucans. I bought a really large ceramic toucan in Guatemala much to Al's disgust and was so excited when it arrived back in Australia in one piece! Reply to this

I didnt see any big colourful birds on my trip to Brazil last month, but I did see some cute little green and brown birdies in some of the hostel gardens. 😊
