We are in the pre-planning for a trip to Chile.
We'd love to hear your thoughts on where to go and what to see. What are your top three or four MUST do MUST see.
Love to learn from your experiences.
Reply to this Although very touristy, but the landscape is simply stunning: the Atacama Desert. You can base yourself in San Pedro de Atacama and make all kinds of fantastic day trips.
What was an adventure for us, but we loved it: rent a car in Puerto Montt and drive down the Carretera Austral. Fantastic landscape and enough guesthouses and stunning farms where you can stay.
Valdivia: this port town is worth exploring 2-3 days
Take time to visit Santiago - its beauty lies beyond the surface. So many markets, artists and different areas with amazing food. But never have whipped cream in summer. It is very common to get some bacteria. Anyway it is safe to drink tap water. We speak of experience.... ;-)
South Chile around Valdivia, Osorno is beautiful. Lots of natur, vulcanos, light hiking, great accomodation. Petrohue has a wonderful hotel in a stunning landscape! You can walk on your own without any problems.
Personally we like the region of La Serena, Valle de Elqui. Good for pisco tasting and star watching. But we would prefer the south if you have limited time.
