I have been researching and the interrail 'global' ticket is pretty damn good value. Was thinking of Eurotunnel from London to Paris, then the train in a clockwise direction round Europe stopping in the capital cities for a few days each. Surely this isn't too much to ask? Anyone done the train thing?

Thanks 😊 Reply to this

Hello Danielle 😊

You could live your whole life in Europe and not see everything. But, you could probably pick off the things and places that most interest you and see them in a month. Your capital city plan sounds good. You could maybe see possibly 10 capitals in 30 days. I wouldnt spend less than 3 nights in each though, because that would be rushing around too much.

PS You could also take night trains to save you some time. Reply to this

yeah interrail seems the perfect option, especially if you're under 26 as you get a hefty discount. However, been reading more into it and planning, the whole of Europe would not be comfortably possible as you would only get like a day in each place, and waiting around for trains a LOT. So I've had to whittle the places down, but maybe some countries one year and the rest another year/month?

Has anyone done the Busabout thing? busabout.com Reply to this

You're right Mell I think I was being a bit too overconfident about the number of cities I could visit! Reply to this

When I went on a one month interail trip, I only went to France and Italy. Another European trip, I spent 4 months getting from Ireland to Greece overland. I wasnt in a hurry or anything.... But, the reality is that you will get tired sometimes and feel like hanging around someplace for a bit longer than a couple of days. And sometimes the best times are had when you hang out someplace for a week. You start to absorb the vibes of the place.

Trains are certainly better to travel around Europe in that busses. The views are so much better. Busses go along a lot of major highways. Trains can make getting from here to there as good an experience as being in the destination. Reply to this

You can certainly tick a lot of boxes in one month Danielle. My friend and I had an inter-rail ticket for a month. Depending on how you enter and leave the country you can have longer than one month, for example, we flew to Munich from London and spent 3 days there, then started our inter-rail ticket, and at our last destination, we had a few extra days after our ticket expired because we took the eurostar back into the UK. That added about 5/6 days to our trip on top of the month pass.

We spent various lengths of time in different cities. The inter-rail pass allows you to be so flexible, e.g. we loved Budapest so much we stayed 5 days instead of 3.

We didn't cover France, Spain or Portugal, three of the big tourist places in Europe but definitely covered a large area in our given time. We probably spent a couple of weeks in Italy.

As Mel says, night trains are a big bonus in saving time. We took the overnight train from Venice to Budapest and that is an extremely long journey, so I recommend doing that too.

In total I think we visited just over 10 major cities. You can most definitely plan a very awesome trip so good luck with it all! Reply to this

Hi Danielle,

For me a month will not be enough to do Europe, not close, but the train idea is the best by far for getting around.
It really deends on what you want to get out of each country. The capitals are great of course but the 'real' Spain, Germany, Lithuania and others may not be in the capital. Maybe two cities for each country will give you more idea of the place.
Going from country to country will be a lot of information to take in, completly different culture, language, currency than the last and three hours apart by train.
My advice, slow things down, relax and enjoy the place your in... Choose countries you have always wanted to go to and not just to tick them off.. It is what travelling is about, learning and experiancing... Reply to this

Train travel is the most economical way to get around Europe. A rental car is very expensive and has no real advantages over train travel. You may wish to plan your trip carefully regarding how many days you will allocate to each city or country. Thirty days is a very short time in which to cover an entire continent. But you should be able to experience the highlights of those countries you choose to see. Reply to this

A month will not be enough to explore all Europe. So my advice is to pick the best. Do your homework and create a where-to-go list. Write the top 10 must visit places in Europe. Europe is a wonderful place to be. Reply to this

Miko, that's what I'm doing. I have whittled it down to Berlin, Warsaw, Prague, Vienna, Budapest, Bucharest, Split, Zurich, Paris and Brussels! About 3 days in each and using night trains! Cannot frickin wait!

Melissa, no I haven't been to Turkey yet but I do want to go! It seems new countries keep popping up that I really want to go to its just finding the time and the means and weighing up the loss of work against travelling etc. Reply to this
