when to start a 6-9month trip and places we will be traveling to an wha sort of budget to allow for our trip as a couple?

would like some help/ideas on our trip.
We plan to start in Feb 2010 from the uk, we will be going for 6-9 months, possibly using a round the world ticket.
Places we planned on visting:

First stop- India (6 weeks)

Second stop- South East Asia ( Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia)- 2months

Third stop- Australia ( 3 weeks) possibly

Fourth stop- NewZealand (6 weeks)

Fifth stop- USA (with family)

we were wondering if this is the best time to start off weather wise, visting these places ( we dont wanna hit any monsoon seasons!)
also do you think the time spent in each place is nessasary? any suggestions?
we will be travelling as a couple, how much would you budget that we each take? we dont plan 2 stay in expensive accomodation and will plan to stay in a double room where possible in hostels/ cheap hotels.
Also are there any places you think we have overlooked and would be worth a vist?

any help will be much apprieciated, thanks muchly

Hello Phillip 😊

The monsoons are not as bad as one would think. Tehy are certainly an improvement on the UK Summer anyway.

I would spend longer in India if possible. I would be thinking 3 months in SE Asia and 3 months in India each, then divide the rest of the time between the other more expensive destinations.

In SE Asia, I think you would need around 20 to 30 Euros between you per day. Same with India. Also, take the visa money into account. It would be 0 to 50 Euros each for visas for those countries. It can be very very cheap if you want. I went to India with my boyfriend and Daughter last christmas for two and a half weeks. We changed 500 Euros at the airport on the way in. I still had enough of that left for 10 days in India by myself a few months later and changed back what was left over and got 60 Euros. Also, I went to Thailand with my daughter a couple of times a few years ago. We went for 30 days each time and spent 500 Euros between us for each 30 days.

hi mell,

thanks for the advice.
we will give it some more thought about the time we intend 2 stay in each place.
we were budgetting about 7grand each for the whole trip, we were not really bothered about spending much time in Australia as its not a place that either of us are really wanting 2 visit right now compared to the other places.
we had thought about visa's although we still need 2 find out how long we can stay in Thailand, we heard it was a different amount of time depending if you travelled into the country by land or air. do you know anything about this or how long you are able 2 stay?

As far as I know, you can get a free of charge 30 day visa stamp when you fly in and 15 days if you enter by land. Also, you can get another 15 days, if you enter by air and then go to another country overland and then renter Thailand overland again.

The Thai authorities have been changing the visa rules quite a lot over the last 4 years so beware that things might change again. Reply to this

Hi Phill,
We got back from a 13 month round the world trip earlier this year from Australia to SE Asia, India, Africa, Europe and Sth America. Over the whole trip we averaged about $85 (43.6GBP) per day for the two of us.
