How to arrange hostel pickup

When booking a hostel do they pick you up from the airport or do you make your own way there?

Hi there - i'm arriving in central or south america and booking a night or two in a hostel before I arrive, speaking no Spanish (learning the basics now) could be a massive problem initially getting from the airport to the hostel. Wanted your advice please - do you just use a taxi although many could rip you off, having the address written in Spanish, try and take a bus, which would be fairly difficult not knowing the language. Or can you arrange for the hostels to pick you up from the airport? Do you do this when you book on-line? i.e. looking at hostel bookers.com at the moment - is there a section to request a pickup when you book?

Any advice would be really helpful

They dont necessarily pick you up. In fact, most of the time they dont.

There are sections in the Lonely Planet book that tell you which ways you can get to and from the airports of the various cities. The Lonely Planet will also advise you about whether the taxi driver in the various places are generally honest or not.

Sometimes I use a taxi, but most of the time I take a bus or a subway into the city and then another to the hostel. I do the same in countries where I know nothing of the language. Subway networks are pretty easy to manage. With busses you may need some more help. I just go to the nearest bus stop I see and show somebody the name of place I want to get to in a book or that I have written and point to the bus stop in a questioning way.

Just do what you would normally do if you visited a city in your own country! Take a map, ask at information desk for advice and of course google it 😊 Reply to this
