Female travelling alone - advice needed!
14 years ago, July 30th 2009 No: 1 Msg: #81524
Hi, I have booked a RTW ticket to travelling to India, Thailand ( & Vietnam, Laos & Cambodia), Chile, Argentina, & Brazil leaving in Nov for 6 months. I have a two week group trip booked for when I get to India but after that I will be on my own.

I have not travelled before and whilst I am confident I have everything I practically need e.g. visas, insurance, money etc, I am starting to worry about being a single white female travelling alone. At the time I thought it was liberating and exciting. But since booking I have read alot of travel blogs with lots of horror stories and bewares. I am still going to go and I am still excited, but how worried should I be?

I was also planning on having Spanish lessons when I get to Chile as I have heard that speaking Spanish is a must - does anyone know how much these would cost? Thanks

Hello 😊

I have been travelling sometimes alone and sometimes with others since I was 19. It is liberating and exciting. For sure there are horror stories about travelling alone as a woman, but they dont happen any more often than they would when you are in your own country. As for the bewares, they are often wise advice that will keep you safe if you follow it.

Why did you delete your account? Do you have another one?

Often the reason people delete an account they just created is because they did not realise that their Nick Name and Blog Name will appear beside every post. They sometimes put their real name in these fields, when they had not intended to disclose this information. 😊 Reply to this

well if she comes back and checks...rest easy, i'm a blond american so i very much stuck out when i went to chile and my experience was AMAZING. don't worry too much, you'll probably get catcalled at because that is just the latino culture, it's mostly fun and games. be careful in the cities of standing around with valuable things (camera, phone) in your hands as some pick pockets will just run by and grab it and take off into the train stations, where it is very dangerous to follow them. common sense is your most valuable tool. and spanish isn't too difficult for picking up the basics. being surrounded by it will help. people appreciate the effort and will try to help you out. I find it very offensive when latino boys whistle at me, find it even more offensive when i stroll up to them and ask who wants to take me out and all they do is laugh at me. 😞 It hurts so bad! Reply to this

Very annoying though, to have your every thought intruded upon with whistles and ''offers''. Reply to this

Well, it is how often it happens rather than what is happening that prevents being able to have a sense of humour about it. It is something that many women get allergic to after a while.

As well as that, there is always the posibility that it might turn into something more than verbal harassment. There are men in certain countries that believe that European, American... women are a lot more ''free'' than the ones in their own country. And they know that women travelling alone do not have a family nearby to step in if a situation becomes threatening.

Even worse when they are just teasing you! :p

I dont respond to them, so I dont know what their intentions are. But likely they would gloss over their inability to deliver what they appear to be asking for with sniggering, when it cames down to it. Machisimo is likely a cover up for sexual repression and lack of experience. Teasing, eh! Apparently, this teasing is part of their ''culture'' and is widely appreciated by the latin women.
