Hi Rachel I did the Odyssey Overland trip it rocked and still meeting up with loads of the girls and guys who did the trip with me, they run a good show, we had a hassle with China not letting us through when we went, but all other overland trucks had the same problem but they re routed us around it and in the end we added India and Nepal to the countries visited. Check out the Odyssey site for the tavel blogs gives you a good idea of how it was. Now planning to head for Africa same style of trip, Odyssey may have something through Africa in 2010 and if they do would def consider traveling with them again. I also looked at Oz bus just can not imagine doing it in that little time we even had days that we where a bit rushed and we had double the time. Safe travels! Reply to this

thanks for the answers so far, i think since i'm not looking to travel till next year,
that one of the overland ventures would be for me but more leaning towards explorer since Odyssey doesn 't go through India. I'm saving like mad at the moment. Any hints on what to take and not to take would be most welcome Reply to this

In 1993 our family traveled by car along the east coast of Australia. Without our grown children in 2002, my wife and I decided to take a bus adventure from Sydney to Adelaide, up the middle to Ayers Rock/Uluru, to Darwin and Kakadu, west to Broome, south to Perth, and back to Sydney. As an older couple we hardly fit the profile for bus travel. Some thoughts: We assumed we could travel during the day and stay in hostals or hotels at night. Unfortunately, some segments only traveled at night, so there was no choice. We rode through the night and heard loud thumps as the bus hit kangaroos at 100 kph. The hotels/hostals varied from acceptable to crappy (our standards are not very high), but most were very convenient to bus stops. In one at Broome I believe, sanitary standards did not exist and you fed change into a machine for cool air which ran out in the middle of the night. One stop at 3 am had a group of aborigines standing around for their highlight of the day but not ours. Two aboriginal women began verbally fighting which turned into a full scale physical fight while we watched from the safety of the bus and the crowd did nothing. Eventually, the police came in a truck with a cage on top and picked one of them up while they both continued to yell at each other. We stayed an extra day in the north because wild fires were too dangerous along the road. Even after staying we ran through a fire that heated the bus sides like an oven door. In Perth I sat talking to a rough looking fellow passenger who had just been released from prison. Although no smoking was allowed on the bus, the crowd made up for it at the stops and stunk up the bus with stale smoke, drugs, and BO. It was truly a wonderful adventure which my wife and I will never forget and don't want to experience again - too old to not shower and ride all night. I did suffer over a year from gastro-intestinal problems. That was a young person adventure. Reply to this

hi,

this odyssey overland trip sounds great. I just have one question (for now).
Is everyone who takes this trip from the uk or are there different nationalities in the group? Reply to this

I have read the information on it and they say people from all nationalites go it's just the trip begins in london
I have had a reply from one person who has done the odyssey trip. I was hoping to hear from any one who had been on the explorer one also. Mel sent me a link to a couple who detailed the beginning of their trip which was really informative regarding the price of getting things ready like jabs but then the blog stopped which was such a shame. Hi Rachel and Tinka Sorry been a while since I check in been a bit busy, back from travelling and need a job to pay the bills. Just a couple of thoughts. Firstly as far as the group goes it changes each year I am sure but the year i travelled we had English, Irish, Kiwi's, Aussies and even an American and they gets people form all over. As far as India we did not plan to do it but ended up going there due to China closing border and looking back is easy to to go to India but China and Tibet sound amazing and are difficult and expensive to travel, thats just my feeling maybe still upset that we did not do it, India was OK but think Tibet would have rocked. Hey also looked at the Explore trip seems very responsable and wander if it draws a older crowd, we had some older folks on and they where very cool, but still most the group will young and up for a party Reply to this

Has anyone done London to India on their own vehicle? I am trying to find some information on this how they planned the route and other logistics! Can anyone point to me if there is a group or club who are interested to do this kind of adventure? Reply to this

Hey Rachel, I just paid my deposit to do Odyssey Overland and have been keeping up to date with the current trip. It sounds great, I think even if you were on your own you still have a good group of people to travel with etc. I cant wait!! Reply to this
