I've worked out a few train routes via Seat61, for anyone who's done the journey - what was your experience?
I am looking to travel by train along the following routes:
Hong Kong - Shanghai
Shanghai - Xi'an
Xi'an - Beijing
Beijing - Hanoi (Vietnam)
These trips are going to cost US$434, would I be able to do it cheaper via a domestic airline??
All the travel is overnight so I'm not concerned with how long they will take (20, 16, 13 hours) and the journey from Beijing to Hanoi is 4 days :O
Have you traveled these routes before? Particularly the Beijing to Hanoi - would you recommend it or pay extra for flights?
Cheers,
Renee

Reply to this Hi Renee,
Done quite a bit of traveling by train in China and it is overall fine (for long journey, you might want to book the hard/ soft sleeper)
For discounted airplane tickets, you might want to check [url=http://english.ctrip.com/CTRIP website and [url=http://www.chinaspringtour.com/sss
Currently planning to go to Hanoi by train too, will keep you posted!
Cheers
