I was wondering what cities close to Amsterdam are a must see. I am planning to stay there for seven days and was wondering if there was some close cities that I could also explore? And what should I do while in that city?

Alkmaar is a favorite. Home of the famous cheese market. Half an hour per train.Volendam, quaint little fishing village with lots of old traditional stuff, you can even see people in traditional clothing there. Less than an hour per train.Depending on when they're there they could check out 'de Keukenhof'. Flowers paradise, hot tip in spring. www.keukenhof.nlRotterdam - check out the harbour. An hour per train. The coast is close. Den Haag/Scheveningen. An hour per train. The deltawerken/Dutch defense against flooding are quite a sight. An hour and half if that much. http://www.deltawerken.com/English/10.html?setlanguage=enUtrecht has grachten/canals like Amsterdam, very pretty city. An hour per train if that much.Nijmegen. Oldest city (founded by the Romans) of the NL. An hour and a half per train.

Reply to this Marken Island is a traditional Dutch fishing village. It's an easy day trip from Amsterdam's Central Station.
