First time traveler looking for advice from travelers who've done it before.
15 years ago, February 15th 2009 No: 1 Msg: #63173
I am a 25 year old male from the UK. I've never been traveling before but am thinking of going to Canada, I would be traveling by myself. I have no idea about the finances involved but i was planning on on getting together around £3,000 (around $4,200 U.S.) and maybe getting a part time job over there after a few weeks.
I feel I may be being a bit ambitious for my first trip and i don't have much of a plan so far... any thoughts or advice would be appreciated! Thanks Reply to this

Hello Chris 😊

Canada is an easy and safe place to travel. No reason to believe that you are being too ambitious for a first trip.

As regards work, you might need a work permit. When I was there, I had a student work permit for a year.

Not sure how much money you need per day to travel there these days. Maybe somebody else can answer that. How long are you planning to be there anyway? My guess is that you would need around 30 to 60 Euros per day, not including inter city transport.

A Lonely Planet guide to Canada might be useful for you. It has all kinds of practical information about travelling in Canada. It costs around 35 Euros and is available in most bookshops around the world.

I would agree Canada will be safe and easy for an international trip. You should have minimal language problems (just French in Quebec, though many people will speak English, so not really a problem even there). You'll have infrastructure that I imagine will be generally comparable to the UK. Still lots to see and lots of land to cover depending on what you're looking for.

I would guess your biggest concern for Canada is that it will be more expensive than other destinations you might travel, which I suppose is your tradeoff for a safe and easy destination. 3000 Pounds would be about $5300 Canadian Dollars (according to my Mac widget converter), so at $60 CAD it seems you could do about two months and still have about $1700 CAD for intercity transport. Of course, I'm not factoring in a plane ticket across the pond...

$60 CAD seems somewhat realistic if you stay in hostels and such. This would be about $47 USD, so if you did $25 USD for lodging a day, you'd have the remainder for food and other expenses. A quick look on my favorite online hostel site, www.hostelworld.com (I get nothing for mentioning them, BTW) shows in bigger cities such as Ottawa, Montreal, Calgary, and Vancouver (picked only because I suspect hostels would be more expensive in larger cities, so more worst case scenario), you can find hostels around $25 USD/day.

Get some books on look online for more info on Canada. I live in Minnesota (so on the US/Canada border, at least the state. I live a few hundred miles south of the border, however) so we hear some about what we affectionately call "Canucks". If you have more specific questions, let me know. Reply to this

Thanks for the response guys, I'll do a bit of reading on the subject and sell my car (some of my travel money depends on that!). Then I'll look into the finer details, so I may be back with some more questions! Reply to this
