Hello!

I am completely new to travelling, I've been more of a holidayer, but in my quest to see the planet I've realised that this place is just to big and so I need to start putting some serious effort into it, so I'm planning a RTW trip. I'm a 23 year old female and am planning to go by myself about a year from now for 6 months from Jan to July.

I have a rough plan which I want to figure out before I start talking to STA or travelnation (or anyone else you want to suggest) which is a little bit vague because I don't know where to start.

My original plan was to leave from London and fly over to South America and stay there for 2 months, then head across the Pacific for about 3 weeks hitting Easter Island and Fiji or Tahiti and then over to New Zealand, up to Indonesia, over to Singapore then work my way through Malaysia, South Thailand and and island or 2, North Thailand, through Laos to Vietnam, down Vietman to Cambodia and then back to Thailand to fly home from Bangkok, with the Asia leg taking 3 months.

Now obviously my Asia plan is well thought out but South America is a bit misty. I want to limit the flying when I can and as I don't have forever I'm thinking I'll miss out Brazil simply because it's huge (I don't plan for this to be the last trip of my life, so Brazil and China and India and Nepal 😞 will have to wait) but apart from that I know I want to see Peru and Colombia and Venezuela and Ecuador!

I'm thinking I should start in Venezuela then Colombia, Ecuador then Peru and then down to Chile to fly over to Easter Island and start skipping across the Pacific. That of course leaves on average a week and a half in each country and if I'm going overland probably even less. Is this feasilble?? Should I cut out a few places or add a few flights????

I have a well paying job right now so I plant to start saving for this ASAP hoping to get at least 8k but possibly up to 10k which will include the cost of flights. Obviously with the economy I might get laid off but if that happens they'll pay me off and I'll have more to work with and even more time lol.

Okay so please comment on any aspect of my trip, I have no idea what I'm doing but I've been reading this forum and others so I think I'm on the right track. Things I don't really want to change is the overall length of time or the countries in Asia, but I can mix and match the time spent in each place and cut out 😞 some countries if I have to. Oh and make NZ just a stop off and I can come back to it later if need be.

Thank you in advance!!! Reply to this

Hello Erica 😊

If money is no object, then it does not matter how many countries you hop in and out of. Spending more time in a country means visa and transport costs are less.

I would however plan to spend 3 night to a few weeks in every place you are stopping. Your trip is quite long and I think you will need some relaxing time here and there.

.....mix and match the time spent in each place and cut out 😞 some countries if I have to.

You have around 60 years of living or maybe more ahead of you. You dont have to cover every country on this trip. Rather than trying to cover the world on this trip, think about what it will be like in each place. Rushing around is not much fun in my opinion. I personally like to have lots of time to soak up the athmosphere. If you end your trip with only having totted up a high number of tourist attractions and countries you will have missed out on something special. That special thing is how it feels to be in each country, the people you interact with, those unexpected experiences that happen when you are doing nothing at all.....

Hi Mel

Thanks for the feedback. I WISH money was no object (I'm playing the lotto tonight!!!) It's probably the time scale that's causing the most issues, but naturally I've spent the day trying to work and having my brain mill over travelling the world. I think my original thread was a bit of a mouthful but I've cut a few places out and I've come up with a new plan that has about 2 weeks per country.

I've got the UK to Ecuador > Peru > Bolivia > Chile then over to Easter Island > Fiji/Tahiti (I've dreamed of going to Fiji for YEARS but maybe tahiti is more feasible? I dont know yet) then over to Indonesia (skipping NZ) > Singapore > Malaysia > Southern Thailand and an island > Cambodia > Vietnam > Northern Thailand where I can fly back to the UK.

I think that gives me much more time and I can always go back, I guess I was just a bit excited about the prospect but I think my new "plan" is much better. I'm guessing I'm going to need to throw in a flight or 2 in asia but I guess when I speak to the agents about it they'll know. The mroe I htink abotu it the more I'm thinking to cut through Argentina instead of going to Chile and flying to Easter Island from there....

I don't want to set anything in stone and over plan but I should have a good idea of where I want to go before I set off shouldn't I??? Reply to this

Certainly a good idea to have a loose plan about where you are going to go. Nothing needs to be set in stone before you leave, appart from the flights you buy before setting off. I presume you are buying some type of round the world flight ticket?

Yes, I plan to figure out a rough itinerary and then contact one of the travel agents to find out about flight prices and then whether it can be made cheaper or easier if I moved so and so or I went via somewhere else. I see most agents have plans already but only a few cover South America AND Asia and then the ones that do cover America too but I don't want to include America so hopefully it'll work out. It will work out. These things always seem more complicated when you are planning a trip than when you are actually on the trip. Reply to this

Hey!! i was looking in google for people who would like to visit my country, Venezuela, beacuse there's always a pleasure to me, to talk about my country... I don't know if you're still interested to traveling to Venezuela, but if you are, i could recommend what kind of places you should and should not go.... Just to name a few ones, you can search pictures or information on google about, La gran sabana, or Canaima, In Canaima is the Salto Angel (The largest wartefall in the whole world) it's just amazing, gorgeous, and going there is a lifetime experience.... There's also, Los Roques (i little bit more expensive, but definitely Worth It!!!) Merida, gorgeous montains all around....
Maybe you Have heard that venezuela is kinda of insecure.... let me tell you, well, we are not having great times around here, but you would be safe as long as you take care of yourself... Venezuelans are very friendly and lovely persons, and they love to have tourists around.

If you are thinking to visit Venezuela, i would love to keep telling you the things you should know about my country... You can definitely count with a Friend in here 😊 Reply to this
