Northern Thailand vs. Southern Thailand

Trying to decide whether to trek north in Thailand

I\'m heading to Thailand for a few weeks and I\'m looking for some input on whether it would be better to stick to the coast and explore the islands for a longer period of time or if I should trek North and explore the cities up there. What is the best way to get to Northern Thailand if I should decide to head up there? Are there any cities that I should make a point of visiting? Thanks for your help, it\'s much appreciated! GO NORTH FOR SURE!!! the south is absolutely beautiful, but it is way more touristy and expensive. You can fly or take the overnight train to Bangkok (this is an experience in and of itself 😊 and definitely hit up Chaing Mai (sp?) its amazing! very cultural city, with more of a local flair. stuff is dirt cheap and there is so much to do!!!! I was in Thailand for 6 weeks a few years ago, and the northern part is definitely where i'd go back to!!! Reply to this

I second spending some of your time in Chiang Mai :-)

I was in Thailand for 10 days earlier this year, and split my time about 50/50 between north and south. Air Asia is probably your cheapest option if you want to fly between the two. Reply to this

Elizabeth,

Go North Young Lady.

Overnight bus or trains are available from Bangkok to Chaing Mai. Be careful of which overnight bus you take. A VIP bus may cost a few extra dollars, but was worth it for us. If you take he train, go directly to the train station to purchase your train tickets. You can research the times and costs on the Thailand rail website.

Chaing Mai is incredible. We spent two weeks thre and plan to return for another round. CHiang Mai offers just about something for everyone and prices are great. Be sure to check out some f the trekking and adventure opportunities. Lots of activities. Cheap and great dental work can be done with ease and peace of mind. The massages are world class. Take in a ccoking class--you get to enjoy your own creations. Check out the night market and Sunday market--be sure to negotiate. Plently of accomodations in the old city.

Feel free o check out our blog enty on Chaing Mai and be sure to read what other travelers have to say in theirs.

Have fun. Reply to this
