... would never go to a meeting of neo Nazi's. If I happened, by accident, to walk in on one of their meetings I would leave because I know I would get highly excited, insulted, angry, physically sick and generally depressed by the fact that there are still people who do actually agree with Nazism.

If there ever was a blog that says anything as bad as what the Neo Nazis say I think it is not something that should be allowed. I have met and spoken with a few Neo Nazis here in Munich. They are truely disgusting to listen to. I think there is a difference between using our free speech rights and abusing them by hate mongering. There is a decency threshold that applies to people no matter what their upbringing or culture. Reply to this

It was an extreme example, I doubt that many neo Nazi's travel that much and they probably have their own forums. If there ever was a blog that was that extreme I think the blogger would get a lot of nasty comments about it, and if he deleted those comments it would still reach the forum at one point and people would comment on the blog via the forum. It would probably be more effective than deleting the blog, it would show how many people are disgusted by it, that it is not acceptable to the vast majority of humankind to propagate that kind of thought and maybe (though I have little faith in that), just maybe, the blogger will learn something and change. And it might persuade others of similar thought as the blogger to alter their way of thinking.

But this is becoming another topic all together... How much is or isn't allowed to be said in a blog? When do you cross the line? When should a blogger be excluded? Who decides that? And is exclusion the best way?

A site owner.

And is exclusion the best way?

I think so. I heard about some unmoderated interenet sites that got so nasty that they were finally shut down.

I wouldnt want to belong to a site where anything goes. There is no point in saying anything on a site where only those who are the most offensive are taking part in the discussions because everybody else left. Reply to this

But a travel blog isn't a discussion. A forum and a blog are two different things. Anyway I agree with you about there having to be a threshold and all that, I just found the discussion interesting ;-)

And this was supposed to be a lighthearted topic :-)

Wow, about the worst I have had are people explaining the biological difference between a turtle and a tortoise to me or lightly griping about my use of the name Constantinople in a blog about Istanbul - I suppose I am not trying hard enough (that or the blogs are too long for people other than my mom to actually read them). Ahh Stefan SERB... He was sending messages to Jennijen a couple of years ago which were of a similar flavour. I did a bit of research, found out where the guy lived and the comments stopped coming...strange that!?

For the record he lives(d) in Southall. Which for anyone who knows London is a largely Indian, Hindu area in the West of London. Rather ironic, and indicative of his rage; imagining him locked in his room spewing out his bile on a travel site painted a very pretty picture of the guy.

But saying that I'd have to agree with Ali's 'ex' theory. I think most of the anonymous negative comments recieved are from people we know. So we should probably take them personally;-) Publish them and be damned. Whether we know the poster or not, their comments will be judged publicly; their anonymity is ultimately no hiding place...

I did wonder if my annonomous abuser knows me. I have heard from other people that they have been tracked down by people they knew on other sites and abused. All because they had an opinion others didnt like? Reply to this

That Serb guy seems like the type of person that the report button was especially made for. 😊 Reply to this

Well I sit on my laptop and chuckle at this thread!! I thought it was me, I fell into a pit of depression & self doubt after a couple of nasty comments on our blog.......all personal, all anonymous & all from persons who we have decided are filled to bursting with jealousy. Funny how most of the nasty comments are from people who don't have a travel blog to share their tales!

Anyway, after the self doubt, huge amount of tears, & drowning our pity in a bottle of rum, 3 minutes had passed. We deleted the comments......and decided to carry on travelling the world & getting some amazing ideas from the people that make this site so very cool. 😊

It's so true in our case that the blog is written for our friends & family. (Those who choose to read & make nice comments we love too!!) All others can......well just get on with their own lives and hopefully not look us up to take them out for a drink if they are in the same place as us!!!!

Not a laugh - but if you want to see how controversial blogs generate completely uncalled for comments - check out this log entry:

Tibetan sky burial in China

A few little samples;

This is a disgrace & you sir are an utter for publishing this. I will explain in language that even a moron can understand. This is a religious ceremony that is currently being banned by the Chinese government primarily because it is a draw for a certain kind of ghoulish tourist. The same Chinese government incidentally who have been in illegal occupation of Tibet for the last 50 years. Notwithstanding any ethical considerations about filming. If you were privileged enough to witness a sky burial it is not something that you should have taken pictures of and certainly not for publication on a website. No sir you are due a flogging for this devilish piece of impudence. That is if the oedema doesn't get you first, puffy boy.

Nothing like a bit of name calling to get people to listen to your argument....

It's an argument that will run and run - but my take on it is that the internet is just another medium - it's no different from publishing in a magazine or book - I wonder if National Geographic get letters like this? Reply to this

Well I've just read all the comments for "Tibetan sky burial in China" and feel so much more educated as a result. Why did he only write one blog though??

People really do get very passionate about our blogs.....wow! Reply to this

R Eldar did have a whole blog - many entries - at one point - I guess either looking for work or as a result of the barrage of messages and comments he decided to delete the blogs - but this entry stayed - it's linked to from wikipedia as primary evidence about sky burials - and gets thousands of visitors. What were his other blogs about? If they are as fascinating as the one about Sky Buriels it is a pity he removed them. I wouldnt want to see things like vultures eating a dead body, but I do like to know what is going on the world by reading about it. Reply to this

Just got another one today regarding my Columbia blog Don't mind the news Mum, I'm off to Colombia!.

Annoying - Are you too full of yourself or is it me being over-sensitive about bragging and boasting? Colombia is a normal country, not an adventure or as you like to put it; a challenging destination. So get off your horse(not your face) and get back to your mum.

Hilarious. Made my day! Reply to this

I was told that I am to refrain from talking about countries I have not been to when I made a comment about Columbia. But I also get told not to comment on countires I have actually been to because I have not been in that country long enough to be worthy of commenting and if I have been there long enough then I am lying about the country..... And there are a bunch of other ''rules'' I have been given that would keep me good n' quiet if I was to pay attention to them. :D
