hey,
im currently travelling on my own as my friend had to go back to work, and all of my friends are also very sensible and staying in their cushtie jobs!....and ive travelled through malaysia so far, and am now in phuket thailand. Dont be worried at all really because there are so many other travellers in the same situation! I was a bit worried by travelling by myself but its weird how you always meet someone who is travelling in the same direction or you randomly bump into people.....i suppose ive had lots of brief small friendships but its been good! I havent had any problems so far except difficulties with buses running to time! Just use your common sense and you will have a wicked time, hope this helped?!!

Hello Louise 😊

I moved this to the New to Independent Travel forum.

You could also post on the Looking for Travel Companions if you want to find somebody to travel with.

I have travelled quite a bit by myself. There have been a few lonely times but I also met lots of new people so I think you will too.

Alan is right, you will meet loads of people, so don't worry about being too lonely. It will be really fun, and you may make some lifetime friends!

I suppose being a woman alone I would throw in that you should probably be careful who you buddy up with, and don't get into any situations you cannot get out of, or allow yourself you be taken off somewhere that you aren't familiar with. This can range from saving you from boredom to real safety issues. Ask people what they are up to, they are usually pretty up front. When asking directions, I suggest asking women and children instead of men. Again, just a little safety tip. 😊 Common sense, like Alan said. Oh, and after dark, its best not to be out and about by yourself.

When you come through the US, though I have no idea where you plan to go, just keep in mind we are set up for personal vehicle ownership, and except for the east coast and Chicago, the pub trans is downright dismal to nonexistent. Do not, unless for short trips (less than one day) ride the Greyhound bus system. It is hideous, and not anything like the Greyhound system in Australia. It is cheap, but pretty unpleasant and not particularly safe. That avoided, you should have a great time!! Reply to this

LOU!!

Ahh I am so jealous, I have just got back from a very simmilar trip, I spent 7 months travelling and went to Thailand, Cambodia, Malayisa, Borneo, Oz, NZ and then did a road trip east coast to west coast in the US. I did most of it alone and met friends for a couple of months of it.

It was the most amazing experience of my life, I would do it again tomorrow if I had the money. I did find it quite hard going from cheap to expensive, but you soon get used to it and blow your budget : ) My first few days in Melbourne I did wonder how I was going to live the chocolate is over a £ a bar.

Travelling by myself was fantastic, you are never alone you meet so many people. In fact it was easier by myself you can make all your own decisions. Getting around was so easy there are always people to help. I felt so safe travelling round Asia, everyone was so friendly.

It goes so quick, make the most of every minute. I'm quite depressed about being back in rainy england and broke with now no deposit for a house but it was worth every penny. I've been back a week and I'm not liking it one bit.

I would recommend this too in Chaing Mai in north thailand

I did a day trip there, you get to feed and bath the elephants and watch them play. it gets quite booked up so it's advisable to book.

The centre helps injured and abused elephants and they are never ridden but it was one of the most amazing expereinces of my life to interact with these wonderful creatures.

From Chaing Mai I also got a bus to Pai - it was a wicked hippy place but absolutely fanastic and cheap. There was such a cool vibe to the place.

Any more questions just ask : ) Reply to this

Asia was my favourite place of my trip, so diverse and you get to experience all the different cultures. Reply to this

I was alone in Europe for six weeks after my traveling partner found out she didn't like to travel and went back home (lame!). Although I was somewhat scared at first, I ended up preferring the independence of traveling alone. No more arguing about where to go and what to see! Plus, I walk pretty fast, and tend to try and see everything in one day by walking sixteen miles! (It took me an hour to walk across Paris once). Probably also the cheap-skate in me that wants to save a buck by not taking local transportation.

Also, take a good, thick book with you. I prefer an older author such as Dickens or Rosseti. These books were not only cheap, they were also the only ones I could find that were in English. They took a long time to read, and they were great to have when I was bored sitting around waiting for the train.

I was in Thailand a million years ago, and there were lots and lots of young people traveling. One single girl hooked up with my family and hung out for awhile and she had had good experiences traveling alone. Reply to this

I am going soon too Lou and share your concerns, but EVERYONE I have spoken to have been saying the same, that being on your own is safe and the best way to do it. I am so excited and I am off as soon as I find a tenant for my house!!!!!

OMG....you go in two days..woo! Hope you have a fab time.
