Going to Thailand for 30 days, need budget advice.

I am looking to backpack through Thailand and I was hoping for some advice on my budget. I was planning on budgeting $15/day. I'm going to stay in hostels and hopefully guest houses and eat inexpensively. I don't want to have to constantly worry about money though. Any tips or advice from previous travelers would be greatly appreciated! :-)

Hello Dana 😊

What you have is enough. I went to Thailand twice with my 7 year old daughter last year for 30 days each time. Each time we spent only 500 Euros between us for the entire 30 days. We stayed in budget accomodation and travelled on second class buses and 3rd class trains and ate in budget restaurants and from street stalls which are very inexpensive. Even on that budget we got to go to some nice restaurants on Sundays and buy some clothes and take a taxi now and again.

eating inexpensively means 30-50 baht for basic foods like pad thai, noodle soups etc. biggest expense will be your lodging, that is going to eat into your 15 dollars real quick. take songthaews and tuk tuks to make up the difference, avoid taxis-metered or not. Reply to this

What are songthaews and tuk tuks? Yah I'm hoping I can do some couch surfing and hopefully find some nice, inexpensive hostels. Reply to this

You can get a double room for around 4 Euros per night in most places. The most I payed for a double room in Thailand was 7 Euros per night. That was on Koh Samui.

Songthaews and tuk tuks are the public transport in many places in Thailand.

Songthaew

tuk tuk

Another form of local public transport are rickshaws.

Rickshaw

Note: Tuk Tuks can be dangerous. With their 3 wheels they are not really suitable for tearing around Bangkok the way they do and sometimes fall over.
