Los Llanos Consistently described to me as ´The Heart of Venezuela´. Of course the two folk who said that was a tour guide/tout and a ranch hand who lived there, so they might be more than a little biased. In my regards though, if it´s not the heart, it´s a damn major organ. So. After some trepidation on heading into the wilderness (you never know...Chavez might have a Naeem-eating-Anaconda out there), I bought a trip to Los Llanos, which is a mixture between wilderness and farmland to see. Well to be honest, I didn´t really know. I just figured that I should see more of Venezuela than an overly boisterous city and a college town. I was accompanied by Bas, Marc, Claire, Daniella, and Kathrin. Who are Dutch, Swiss, English, German and German respectively. I felt ... read more

Following a night of sleeping in hammocks, we all woke up at 6:30, stuffed ourselves with amazing food, and headed out on another safari. We rode in the jeeps for about fifteen minutes until we reached the river. We hopped into a huge canoe, and our guide began to paddle away. Once it was deep enough, one of the local boys started the motor- but we still had to maintain our balance so as not to fall into the piranha-filled water. The ride was amazing- we saw howler monkeys, iguanas, caiman, birds, piranhas, turtles, poisonous snakes, pink freshwater dolphins, and capybara (the world’s largest rodent- basically a four-foot rat without the tail). Our guide even jumped off the side of the canoe into the water-yes, the water filled with piranhas-to catch a turtle for us! He ... read more

It’s Week Three already! Time has gone so fast here! So far, I’ve had two great weekends, six days of classes, and two exams. I still (or only?) have three weekends, fourteen days of classes, eight exams, and three papers. Eight exams and three classes seem like a lot, but I know it’s going to go by too quickly. Last week mainly involved a lot of class and a lot of studying. My first two exams went as good as I could hope- I got an A on one, and I’ll get the other back today. They both involved a lot of writing in a short amount of time, but I got through them okay and, having prepared myself for the worst, they weren’t as terrible as I was expecting! Last weekend also involved my first ... read more

It´s been an interesting week of ¨vacation¨here in Venezuela. I only wish I had some pictures and video to go along with the story...it really deserves illustration. I hopped on the buscama with Sharlene and her girlfriend Yaneth on Friday, November 30th and headed to Puerto La Cruz. It was about a 20 hour bus ride so we got comfortable and waited patiently to arrive. The scariest part of the trip was that the National Guard stopped us three times to check everyone for identification and look through our bags. It seemed like everytime I fell asleep only to wake up with an AK-47 in my face. Very annoying and a little bit scary I might add. The second time we were stopped really made me nervous because the guard was quizzing me about how long ... read more

In my previous blogs I've been mentioning canaimas I think - thats a region in Venezuela - the animal I meant to refer to from the crocodile family is a cayman. The pill didn't have a very good effect on me I'm afraid and we had to get back on that bloody trailer at 9.00 in the morning... Its too hot already and I'm tired of been thrown about like a "bio chicken" as Ida puts it (we've been so well fed)..... Between the lack of sleep and the effect of the pill, the bumpy trailer and a very bad mood I'm not soo enamoured anymore - well until I see this illuminous green spider fall on to the trailer - its just amazing even the insects have beautiful colours here.... An afternoon spent by the ... read more

The bloody mosquitos! I have been eaten alive - and in fact its not just mosquitos its ants as well, depite the deet..... For some reason they seem to have much larger appetites for me than for either Ida or Emma - especially the soles of my feet - nightmare! Its not bad during the day but I can't sleep at night... We have our breakfast and head off for a leisurely stroll, the heat is intense, a bit too intense and our planned 3 hour walk is cut short because Emma is not feeling great.... We all got a bit too much sun though - despite our precautions the tops of our shoulders are slightly burnt... I'm driving everybody a bit nuts by taking photos of everything, insects, butterflys, birds - but I just find ... read more

On the ranch we wake up relatively early - breakfast is at 8.00 am - The food is great here, basic, fresh juices are delicious, melon, papaya, oranges. Also served is a traditional type of corn, circular, ciabatta type bread known as "arepas" - appropriately named in fact because its like a meal in itself - cheese, ham and eggs..... First excursion in the morning is at 9.00 and we get back into the trailer and head off unsteadily down one of the dirt tracks that disappears into the horizon of these vast plains. Not 10 minutes into our journey we spot an anteater in a tree - its incredible these are animals that we've only ever watched on TV and now we're standing less than 5 metres away from one - he peaks out through ... read more

Arrived at Barinas picked up by Freddy our transport person - just to take us from the airport to Hato Cedral.... Not the most talkative of people, although we tried... well mostly Emma in fact prompted by us now and then... we gave up and basically took in the scenery for the next three hours... Some of the houses lining the sides of the road appeared to be pretty makeshift as though they were put together by anything that came to hand. There is a lot of colour not from the landscape necessarily which is surprisingly green (wet season), but the material used to build the houses and the clothes the people are wearing..... bit of an unfortunate incident on the way there - we stopped to buy water and not being used to the currency ... read more

It was time to head deeper into Venezuela, and we had a happy reunion to kick things off. Dave "The Hat" and Cameron had finally caught up with us. Dave "The Hat" is so called because no-one has ever seen him without a hat, and he has a collection of SEVENTY hats. It is entirely possible that he showers in a hat. Cameron is our overland truck, named after Cameron Diaz. (all the Dragoman fleet are named after supermodels and actresses). When she turned up, half our group ran over and gave her a big hug and a kiss. Dave did not have an easy time crossing the border from Colombia. The main troubles were on the Venezuelan side. He was sleeping on the truck when he was awoken by the National Guard. They waved him ... read more
