After a few days of mucking around in the wilderness, it was time for a spot of sun, surf and sand. So we headed to the small fishing village of Puerto Colombia, in Harry Potter National Park. (It's not really called that. It's actually called Henri Pittier National Park, after the founder of the Venezuelan National Park scheme). One half of the park is mountains and cloudforest, and the other half is miles of unspoilt beaches and coastline. 7% of the world's species of birds are found here! On the way to the park, we were boarded by the National Guard, who wanted to see our passports. Our tour leader, Dave "The Hat", had a standard procedure for this. 1. Even if you speak Spanish, the passengers should act as if they speak none. They will ... read more

The drive from Maracay is magnificent, up a windy narrow mountain road then down the other side. So very pretty and a great view. There was a fair amount of traffic. The bus drivers are mad, barely slowing down to squeeze past the truck, and shouting a lot, persumably telling us to hurry up because we had plenty of room. Well ... maybe as much as an inch. Lots of cars had to reverse to let us past. And we had to reverse 2 or 3 times to get around some corners. Lots of fun! We stayed at Posada Alamania and, not surprisingly, there was a big german guy running the place. We got a little room with a fan, basic but OK. Breakfast was fantastic with brown bread, lovely fresh juice and excellent coffee. ... read more

Lampimat jouluterveiset Teille Kaikille! Vietamme joulua Puerto Colombian (loma)kylassa meren rannalla. Taman tavaramaaran asettelu tapotayteen bussiin ei o... read more

hello from the Caribbean! I´m in Puerto Colombia, a small town on the caribbean coast of Venezuela - did I mention the Caribbean?! The story so far is: I flew to Lisbon 1 week ago, spent a couple of days there just pottering about. Just went for a long walk the first day and then went to the Oceanarium the second day, and had another unexpected long walk trying to find it after taking a wrong turn. Pretty uneventful, but it was nice just spending time in pavement cafes somewhere warm and walking by the sea. Or it might be a river or estuary or something, but you know what I mean. Then flew to Caracas last Thurs. Got a whole 2 seats to myself during the flight and had 1 hour in Funchal in Madeira, where ... read more
