I´m writing all this a few days after since its been bloody hard to get to the net for an extended amount of time but since I´ve kept a diary of stuff I can update online. However the idiot that I am, left my camera back in the hostel we´re staying in, so will have to upload pics another day..sorry! So yeah I finally found Graeme in the airport in Lima, we went to an airport hotel and watched a bit of premiership football and then caught our flight to Caracas, Venezuela, a city that is infamous for its kidnappings and crime.. The airport was a bit of a nightmare..full of rip-off merchants and dodgy characters, and we were there for over 2 hours working out how to get to the city by taxi...Our guide book ... read more

Wow... I knew I didn't really keep my Blog up to date... but that I actually didn't write about anything of my Venezuela Experience, exept the arrival somehow slipped my mind... Well... month have passed, I have seen a lot of this country and still there are so many things left, that I did not manage to visit and now it's already time to say good bye and start once again a new journey... So I'll just try to sum up the most important moments and experiences... After a pretty stressed start in my job here - because I had the first big conference I was in charge of just one month after my arrival, had to prepare sessions, select my trainer team, train the trainer-team, work on the logistics of the event and so ... read more

The journey was bad enough to begin with. I had to get back to Ecuador, so the Dragoman tour continued towards Brazil without me, setting off at 8am. I had a nightbus back to Caracas that night at 10pm, which meant waiting around by myself for FOURTEEN HOURS. And the nightbus itself was a ten hour journey. Plus, when I arrived at Caracas airport, I would have a further eight hours to wait for my flight back to Quito. Oh, the joys of travel! I was not looking forward to Caracas airport in particular. I took an "official" cab from the bus station to the airport, because normal cabs have been known to drive people down back streets and rob them blind. An official cab has an official sticker on the side with an official cab ... read more

On my last full day in Ecuador I headed for the nearby volcano of Cotopaxi for a fun day's mountain biking. It's the thing to do. For once the gods were shining on me and we (all 15 of us on the tour) had an amazing clear day - a rare thing I believe around Quito. We were driven up the mountain to near the base camp and then basically given our bikes, helmets and knee and elbow protectors and told to get on with it (the descent that is!). Well i'm glad i put the protection on, because the initial slope was loose gravel and had precisely no grip. Within 20 seconds a Dutch guy had catapulted himself off a 6 foot drop (by accident) but thankfully was ok. By some luck, there were ... read more

So here we finally are, the famous group emails are no more a new era has begun, the first entry into the blog commences... I start with an apology for the absence of photos. Uploading them involves a lot of paraphenalia and as you will see i am still a little wary about carrying round expensive stuff especially as it is approaching sunset when the badboys come out. I promise when i am out of Caracas i will put a few on of both Caracas and wherever my next stop is. Arrived on Wednesday afternoon after two predominantly pleasant flights, the only blemish being the two hour period where i sat through Music and Lyrics. I made the decision to watch it because the man behind me had his headphones on so loud i could ... read more

Hi there, The flights over where fine, still i think 9 hours on a plane pushes my comfort zone a little too far. Madrid airport is something else - Beautiful clean and modern. As the plane came into land in Caracas the view out the window was spectacular huge mountains covered in greenery with little communities dotted all around them right down to the sandly beaches and clear blue waters. When i had gotten past luggage collection and customs I chickened out a little and got a taxi to my hotel - El Hotel Crystal which in on what i imagine is the main commericial street in this part of Caracas Sabana Grande. Its full of shops, cafes and restaurants. The wierdest thing so far is that in the taxi we drove past the slums just ... read more

We were told that Caracas was big, ugly, unfriendly and dangerous. I am sure it is all those things but we went along determined to make the best of our time there. We were staying at the Hotel Floresta at Altamira. We had an 8th floor room with a great view. And a fridge! Our first job on arriving was to book a hotel near the airport for the night of the 30th. We had a very early flight and were warned that the road to the airport was dangerous at night. Only trouble was that because it was Copa America and the weekend a lot of places were full. Some we couldn't get through to and the online booking system failed for others. What a hassle! About to give up we finally got through to ... read more

We have now started our vacation trip. The destination this time is Venezuela. We first arrived in Caracas. We have heard a few horror stories from Caracas such as people getting robbed already at the airport, Caracas being the city with the highest murder rate in Latin America and taxi drivers being criminals. Well, the last statement maybe isn´t a surprise. Taxi drivers are criminals all over the World. But the over all crime rate is supposed to be very high and not even in the airport a tourist can feel safe. We decided to play it safe and stay only a very short time in Caracas and make sure to stay far away from all dodgy areas in the city. We only stayed 24 hours to give us time to arrange things for our future ... read more

Pa morgonen efter, ... read more
