After getting the complete opposite directions from a guy working at the bus station claiming he can speak so so English, I managed to get a lift from a friendly local to the 1949 hostel - this place rocks! It was basically full of Argentinian holiday makers. We met a couple of Chilean guys, Yerko and Marta who were really cool and basically weith a few others kinda formed a small group, and basically partied every night. First day Yerko and I went to the beach in the nearby town of La barra which was quite pretty. In the evening I endoulged in their speciality, Chivito, which was basicallt a Uruguayian steak burger. We then got smashed on the beach, thanks to my bottle of Absolut then at 4:00am decided to go clubbing! The second day ... read more

Day 1 (Tuesday) - Brian and I were traveling to Uruguay the exact same days as Vanessa by weird coincidence, so we decided to make much of the trip together. The only portion of the trip that we were apart was the initial bus ride. When we got to Uruguayan customs, Vanessa was waiting for us. She had arrived 15 minutes before. We all caught the same bus to Montevideo, which picked us up directly from the boat terminal. We were in Montevideo shortly after noon and were all hungry. We went to a hostel I had read about in the Lonely Planet. It was booked but then they told us that they had an annex room with three beds that we could all stay in. We accepted and went up two flights of stairs up ... read more

Geo: -34.8939, -56.1568Troubles sleeping (again) ... if somehow, I could magically travel all around the world, but somehow sleep every night in my own bed, in my air-conditioned room ... if only ... it didn't help that my pillow smelled kind of funky. I flipped it over and somewhat luckily, it smelled a tad less funky. I think I rolled into bed around 1:00 AM, only to be awoken by fireworks at 1:30. They were so close that it sounded more like the city was getting shelled by mortars! Once I realized that a war hadn't broken loose, I actually quite enjoyed the show - I had a decent view out the window while lying in my bunk. I'm still not liking this hostel, but I'm learning to look at the positives - there were the ... read more

Another one of those song quotes that you'll have to figure out for yourself... Punta del Este is the vacation spot for South America´s rich and famous. There are tons of beaches, but even more clubs and bars. The sand and the waves are nice, but the beautiful people sitting on those beaches are what makes them amazing (that and the dental floss the girls call bathing suits). We set up camp on Bikini Beach, cause with a name like that which other beach would four single guys go to, and simply enjoyed the day. The beach, oddly sponsored by Fox Sports, has a DJ all day long, and towards the sunset it turns into a bit of a dance party. The sun is scorching hot, which has been the case in all of Uruguay (someone ... read more

Back in Buenos Aires we ended up staying at Ayres Portenos again. The flight had been delayed by a few hours, so the familiarity was good late at night. We even got into the Argentine way of doing things and went for a big steak at 12.30am. I’m still not convinced that going to bed on a full stomach is the best way of achieving a svelte look, but when in Rome. We took the opportunity to see some more of Palermo and visit the Evita museum before catching the ferry to Colonia in Uruguay the next day. The Evita story left us with mixed feelings as we really couldn’t work out whether she was a force for the better or an egotist. Perhaps a bit of both. We also experienced our first close call at ... read more

South America » Uruguay » East » Punta del Diablo January 10th 2009

I jumped ship from everyone else in La Paloma, and headed up to Punta del Diablo by myself, not really knowing what to expect. I showed up and had to spend the next few hours going from hotel to hotel looking for a room. Every single one was booked full for the next few days, if not weeks or month. Finally, after several hours of searching, I found one where someone had canceled so I was able to spend the night and take a look around the city. It is a ton of cabanas running along the rocky coastline, with many more behind it in a more organized grid. There is a single main street running down to the ocean front, then heading across the back of it, turning more into a pedestrian boardwalk with the ... read more

Well what can I say?? I have stumbled on South Americas best kept secret - Uruguay! What an awesome, cool, laid back country it is (apart from EVERYONE smoking). The capital Montevideo is absolutely lovely and as for the beaches in the east, they are just as good as home. The surf is pumping and the sand goes on forever. The people are so friendly and it is very safe. It really reminds me of having a summer in Australia. I am currently in a place called Punta Del Est which is Montevideo´s answer to the Sorrento of Melbourne and the Palm Beach of Sydney. It is just devine and very busy with Uruguayan holiday makers. I am surprised to see that there´s a lot of money here in Uruguay. Everyone has a smile and it´s ... read more

I know you maybe thinking this is an overload of stories but i am really trying to catch up with myself. Hope you are enjoying them. I do find that the sooner i can write the story to when it happened the funnier i can make it. Funny, i do try. So we made to Punto Del Dialbo which is a very hippy point along the coast of Uruguay. Further south is Punto Del Este and thats where the snobs go supposidly so we stayed clear of any unnatural posing and went for hairy and natural. Which we got and alot more. We stayed in a campsite 2k from the village which was a bit shit cause it is along walk in the hot hot sun. Not complaining! So we walked in to town and it ... read more

hi all again, Well from iguazu we managed to get our selves to Uruguay in two days. We were very good to ourselves on the wayt back from Iguazu and we got the most luxurious bus were the seats go right down into a bed. Its not the expensive and well its a long old trip. So we left Iguazu in our fancy bus and headed back to Buenos Aires. The plans was to keep going until we reached Uruguay. We did the over night bus and then off the bus and walked to the boat terminal which was about a 20min walk from the bus terminal which was near where we had the bikes stolen so i don't like it very much around there. So we got to the boat terminal and it was so ... read more
