27-29th March Montevideo Well excuse me for being thick, but I don’t even know what day of the week it is much less what public holiday – but of course it’s Easter and unlike in the UK where things shut for a couple of days (if that) here they close for a week! The first thing we noticed about this city is it really isn’t a classic tourist destination, it’s a working city and a slightly faded, grubby one. However there are lots of lovely small parks and some fabulous architecture, even if the buildings themselves are derelict and unused. We had a good wander around the old town on our first full day and came across a post office so immediately bought a couple of stamps, we have had to search for them in other ... read more

Where to start, well I guess food is a good topic. As I was told by lots of people it is a meat oriented culture over here. One day in the office I offered salad to one of the colleagues, his answer was: "I do not eat the food of my food - e.g. grass eaten by cows". But what I find odd is, that their favorite food is Sushi - Everywhere you get Sushi. The office life is also very different from home. For instance the hours are longer, the commuting is challenging without a car and the people are extremely helpful and friendly. At lunch everybody meets in the kitchen where the food delivery gets dished out to plates. For about 1 hour you sit together chatting and eating. It is a very family ... read more

After a long and uneventful flight I landed at Carrasco International Airport - when they say international, well the terminal building is new and rather grand, but there were 2 big planes (one Iberia, the other from American Airline) when we landed - and a few small private jets. The same seems true for the city, from what I have seen so far. The Ramblas and Avenidas are quiet - well at least at the weekend and not many people are out either. On Sundays all the shops are open. So Sabine, a colleague from the bank, showed me one of the shopping malls, where I had to buy a new handbag! She also showed me a good substitute for Starbucks right at the sea side where we had tea and cake. Later we even went ... read more

We weren't the only ones who struggled in a rain soaked Puerto Madryn. That evening we over heard a rather camp shop assistant talking to his Brazilian colleague that having been to Puerto Madryn many times, he was so upset that he couldn't find his favourite ice cream/coffee shop with free wi-fi. He had walked the whole length and breadth of the town but returned to the ship defeated as well as deflated. He said that of all the times he had visited this town it had never rained. God must like baseball as he had thrown him a 'curve ball' because everything looked so different in the rain!!! Ah, that explains it then!! Now I understand why we were being told it is such an interesting town and we saw something completely different…it was raining!! ... read more

When we awoke we were in the brackish waters approaching Montevideo, Uruguay. We had a 9:15 AM muster call in the Showroom, the same as two days earlier. We had a city sightseeing tour followed by a wine tasting and barbeque lunch before returning to the ship for another early departure. “Early In, Early Out” the captain had said. So again we went to the Lido for breakfast. French toast was good enough at that last port of call, and I thought I’d have the same today, as did Sharon. The Showroom was packed with earlier tours. We were still awaiting clearance from the local officials to disembark. They finally called our group “Blue Number Ten”. Sharon noted that we finally get the blue stickers (her favorite color). We’d been getting nothing but the red stickers ... read more

On what was meant to be my last night in Montevideo a Swiss guy that I had befriended at the hostel and I decided to head down to the beach to check out the sunset. As we walked the 4 blocks between the hostel and the beach these three guys asked us for the time. Patrick replied to them in Spanish as we walked by without stopping. After about 10 meters I looked back behind us and the three guys were following us. To Patrick I went "we're about to get mugged". Next thing I knew two of them are grabbing at my bag and tugging it until the strap breaks and it comes off. They then go and help the other one who is fighting with Patrick for his iPhone. As I was waiting for ... read more

Not thinking too much about it, I hopped a boat and ended up in Uruguay. I arrived in Montevideo around 7pm Sunday Dia de Los Reyes. I ended up in a parade, not at a parade, in a parade of traditional drumming and dancing. We did not stop until well into the night. Yesterday, my heart and mind were in San Francisco. 6500 miles can't stop me from being a mom. I managed to wander around the city, see a very nice exhibit of black and white photos from the 80s, eat some veggie paella, and sing traditional Argentinian/ Brazilian songs poolside for the evening. I passed the day today at the beach, where the fish were jumping right next to me. I stood out as a tourist because I didn't have my mate tea and ... read more

Visai padoriai išsimiegojęs apie 10.30 ryto atvažiaviau į urugvajaus sostinę, Montevidėjų. Iškart išsikeičiu vietinių pinigų ir suradęs reikiamą adresą sėdu į autobusą. Netrukus aš jau prie durų už kurių manes laukia dar vienas couchsurfing draugas. Šiuo atveju duris atidaro CS draugė, mergina vardu Noel. Iš pradžių planavau Montevidėjuj pabūti 3-4 dienas, tačiau pasikeitė mane priimančių draugų planai, tad arba reiks porą naktų praleisti hostelyje arba šiektiek sutrumpinti viešnagę šiame mieste. Taigi duris atidaro draugiška mergina, kuria čia gyvena su savo vaikinu ir dar keletu draugų. Trumpai pabendraujam ir aš žinodamas, kad čia neturiu labai daug laiko, išskubu apžiūrėti miesto. Pirmai dienai pasivažinėti gaunu dviratį, taip šiandien galėsiu aplankyti žymiai daugiau. Namas kuriame apsistojau yra pačiamie miesto centre, visai šalia senamiesčio, tad visų pirma panagrinėju senamiesčio... read more

Our last shore day and this cruise has come to an end all too soon. On your first day out of the embarkation port you feel you will be gone forever, but the time flies by so quickly. Tied up at the main Montevideo pier at 0800 and were off the ship in a flash (after hitting Jimmy). Big surprise last night…. As part of Steve’s “Ultimate behind the Scenes” ship tour yesterday, we returned to our room from an awesome guitar performance to find a REAL high-end fleece robe, a chef’s apron, and photos of the adventure. Steve keeps his photos; you can guess who gets the remainder of the stuff…. Now we need to figure out how to get all of this crap back home! We hit the beach early for our last tour ... read more

Merry Christmas! Up early because we have booked an early tour of Montevideo. On the bus by 9 am. Our guide is Hector, who has an encyclopedic knowledge of his city and country. The day is overcast, temperature of 22°C. But Hector tells us that yesterday it hit 40°! Uruguay is a small country nestled between Brazil to the north and Argentina to the west. It has been claimed and occupied by both those countries, as well as by Britain and Spain. The early Spanish explorers had to contend with unfriendly native inhabitants and eventually systematically exterminated them. The country achieved independence in 1808 but had to repeatedly fight off invasions from Brazil. The country has only about 3 million people (fewer than the city of Buenos Aires proper), and almost half of them live in ... read more
