The evening we arrived in Tumbes all of Victoria´s relatives and some of her friends turned up to welcome us. It was pretty good fun, and some of Victoria´s relatives are certainly characters, especially her uncle Luis (the chubby man in the yellow shirt). I got introduced to more people than I can remember names for, but I got to meet most of the important people in Victoria´s life... read more

My last few days in Peru were spent in Mancora, at the very north on the coastal border with Equador. The temperature was about 35 degrees, it was sunny all day, I have very little to say about it as I spent pretty much all of my time there relaxing on the beach, swimming in the sea and in the pool and reading my book... but I wanted to put some pictures up just to make you jealous! :P Sorry! ... read more

Sunny Mancora is not the place you want to get sick, just ask Braeden. He has unfortunately been sick for almost the entire time we have been here and has been trapped in the room for days. We believe he got a bacterial infection from the bloody hamburger he ate (he knew better but decided to try it anyway) as he has been sick since that meal 5 days ago. Even his prescribed dose of Cipro wasn´t strong enough to cure it so today I went on a mission to find something that would work. Unfortunately, there are no English-speaking doctors in Mancora but I did manage to find a Spanish-speaking Scottish man who acted as my translator at the medical center and pharmacy. We now have 2 different types of pills that he is on ... read more

We arrived in Mancora, Peru on the night of the 9th after another long bus ride (approx. 15 hours). Fortunately, crossing the border didn´t turn out to be the nightmare we read about on the internet as we chose to take a direct bus to Tumbes then another short bus to Mancora. Apparently several people have had problems with theft, etc. while crossing that particular border point into Peru so we were happy that it was quick and painless for us. Mancora is beautiful! It is hot and sunny everyday and the water is clear and blue - much different than Montañita. We are kind of disappointed we didn´t hear about this place sooner as we would have much rather spent the last 2 weeks here in the sunshine. Matt ended up coming with us so ... read more

So I set my alarm for 4:01am in order to get up today and be at the bus stop by 4:30. I woke at some point in the night very, very, VERY confused...I didn´t know where I was, or even who I was...all I did know is that I was in my birthday suit, on a bed, under some sheets. I started panicking and felt around on the bed to give me a clue as to who/where I was when I felt a plastic object...immediately it hit me...I was me, and I was in Montañita. The plastic object was my travel alarm clock - which had not gone off yet. I checked the time and it was 4:21!!! CRAP...it didn´t go off even though I checked it 3 times before I went to bed. Lucky for ... read more

After out first night of bush camping with little to mention except the marsh mellows we had over the open fire we woke in the morning of the 18th November and headed to Punta Sal which was our honme for the next 3 nights and we were camping on the beach. After setting up our tents Stefano and myself headed into the water which was still kinda warm at 6pm and together with the rest of the group we watched a really nice sunset which made for a beautiful evening. That night we stayed in the bar on the beach and enjoyed a few beers with the group because we knew that day 2 was the party day... Day 2 and we all headed into Man to do a group shop and get some local currency. ... read more

Hello from Peru, YAY OBAMA!!!!!!!!!!!!! On Sunday we left the farm and Vilcabamba and took an 8 hour bus ride across the border and into Piura, a city in Northern Peru. It is very nice to be on the road again and not have to deal with certain aspects of the farm such as tarantulas in the bathroom, cooking for 12 people every night or waking up first to a rooster at 3:30 in the morning and then Tutti (the crazy, now pregnant black lab) at 6, but it was definitely tough to say goodbye to Killo and of course the puppies. By the time we were leaving we had become very good friends with Killo and the puppies had gotten to be painfully cute to the point of it almost making sense to take one ... read more

Hola everyone!! Brian has been in Peru now for 3 weeks! Although I’ve been super busy with work since he’s been here, he’s been keeping himself busy as he’s beginning to write his 3rd paper for publication (he just recently published two papers about his research…Go, Brian!) But on Sundays we’ve been able to explore the Tumbes area a bit. Because I’ve been in Peru now for over 3 months, and my 90 day Tourist Visa is expiring, I needed to cross the Peru-Ecuador border to ‘renew’ my visa and get another 90 days here as a ‘tourist’. Right after Brian arrived in Peru we ventured to the border which is 20 km from Tumbes. Interestingly, this border is the least controlled border I’ve ever seen and we had to literally search for the Peru immigration ... read more
