Hello all So firstly, I´d just like to draw attention to the title. How good is that?! Came up with it all by myself. I think it sums up what I´ve been doing since my last entry pretty well! So on Thursday last week I got to go with Rosa on the first day of the Pregnant Girls´Project. Slightly mixed feelings about it now, given how unorganised the run up to it was and what we actually did on the day. We seemed to spend most of our time on the bus to be honest. Rosa is, from what I can gather, something of an all round Social Assistant type person. I think she is involved with the local authorities, but does actually work for Bruce as well. She seems to know everyone and everything that ... read more

Hello all So I´ve finished my first week of school and had my first weekend here, and I´m starting to settle in quite well. I know all the kids´names now! But I´m finding my Spanish inadequate in many ways at school; for instance I don´t know how to tell them off very well which makes me feel terrible if they´ve hurt someone and all I can do is console that person and not properly resolve the situation. What has struck me though is that at this age they really are just like children anywhere in the world. There are some who are bored and so misbehave, some who want to learn and some who just are cheeky; just like all groups of children. Their outlook will start to change though when they get sightly older and ... read more

Hello all! So I arrived eventually after about 17 hours of planes, and so far the peruvians are lovely, and everyone in the flat is very nice, though all more in tune with the whole travelling thing than I am at the moment. I'm living in a flat with about 12 other volunteers, all between 18 and 29 bar 2 Scottish ladies in their 60s! My spanish is being tested quite a bit at the school because the kids dont know how to explain things in different ways, which is funny because I thought their spanish would be so basic I'd get it straight away! I've been put in a school which is really quite far away from the centre of town, like a 35 minute bus journey. I go with another volunteer called Lorenzo who ... read more

Hi everyone! I am preparing to leave Trujillo soon for Lima. I´ve tried emailing through sdplains but it hasn´t worked. We are having a fun time, but I am ready to get home. I miss all of you! Trujillo is a great city and we visited Chan Chan yesterday. Our friends were given counterfeit money there, however and then when we went to a market on the beach later, their wallet was stolen! I´ll tell you more later. It makes us all a lot more cautious than ever! No more minutes on the calling card. I can´t believe how cheap this trip has been! Anyway, I need to finish packing. Love to you all, Mandy... read more

Today is my last day in Trujillo. From here I´m busing it back to Lima, and on Sunday night fly back to the U.S. I´m seeing people and places here for the last time. I went out with my English students for a couple beers on Tuesday night after class. My last class with the kids was in New Jerusalem on Wednesday. I said good-bye to the salsa teachers last night (Thursday). This morning I picked stuff up at the local grocery store for the last time, and am now in the BrucePeru center for the last time. Today, I´m going with my remaining co-inhabitants to Huanchaco (the beach, though yesterday was likely my last surf day), to dinner, and then off to the buses. I will certainly miss being here, in Peru in general and ... read more

My purpose for spending close to five weeks in Trujillo has primarily been to work with the Bruce Peru Organization. The group´s mission is to solve the problem of lack of education among Peru´s poor (this applies to South America in general, actually). This of problem is reportedly more serious than indicated by national figures, as many of Peru´s impoverished children are never registered with the state. For information about Bruce Peru, go to bruceperu.org. Here I am going to describe my experience day to day, rather than the structure and accomplishments of the organization. A Typical Day. On weekdays, volunteers wake up just before 8 A.M. to have breakfast and then head out to schools. I have been to two schools so far, in the barrios of Alto Trujillo and New Jerusalem. The method of ... read more

As we have been travelling for a while now we reviewed our progress as we sat in Miraflores, one of the nicest suburbs of Lima. The chifa restaurant that we sat in allowed us to take stock of our progress and nibble on a prawn wonton at the same time. We collectively agreed that the pace that we had undertaken for most of our travels perhaps brought the most experiences towards our door but at this point in time we wanted to slow down and just chill out somewhere. So we thought that we would head up the Peruvian coast towards the area surrounding Trujillo, specifically to a beach town called Huanchaco. Prior to our decision we had spent a lovely couple of days hanging around Lima, during which we had organised a bus trip through ... read more

Ok... so after Chiclayo I took a relatively easy 4.5 hour bus ride south to Trujillo and stayed in an empty hostel which was surprisingly run primarily by a 12 year old girl. I was in a four bed bunk bed dorm room all alone, so in the cold evenings i just used all the blankets off the other beds aswell. Within Trujillo I took a one day spanish language tour with a bus load of peruvian tourists, there wasnt an english option available so i made do. By the end of the tour I was a pro at sniffing out any english langauge groups at the ruins or museums and tagging on to the end to listen to the info about the ruins etc that i was looking at. On the tour we first visited ... read more

I´ve now been in Trujillo for a little over a week. Not many photos yet, but I´ll add some later.... To get here, I took a 10 hour bus trip up the coast. I slept some, but mostly what I saw while awake was desert and occasional coastline... lots of desert. I got here in the evening at met the other volunteers at the BrucePeru organization. Mostly English people currently, but others from Ireland, Austrailia, and, until recently, two others from the states. The weekend was laid back, I walked around the city a bit. Very little trees in the city streets. I appreciate the trees, grass, etc. added to the streets and sidewalks in the states more now. The main Plaza De Armas is well designed, with grass in the trees in the middle. It ... read more

After 24 hours on a bus, we finally made it to Trujillo in Peru. Only spent a day here really. Visited an archeologica site called Chan Chan, went to Huanchaco which has a famous beach restaurant serving wicked seafood but it was closed, so Boucs and I purchased som little live baby crabs from a local and decided to use them as bait to go fishing - didn't catch shit! We managed to find another place though where we had some grilled fish covered with prawns and salsa for about $8 each. It was then off to the bus station to catch another bus (cos we love them so much!) to Lima. This one was well comfortable, got blankets and pillows and everything - which we knicked of course! ... read more
