Unless you are looking for a Disney-ish experience, Puno is more or less a place to skip or to pass through quickly. Avenida Lima, the main street, is limited to walking, (thankfully, so at least your chances of your legs being broken are less than in Arequipa) but the unintended consequence is a plethora of touts, tours, and rip-off restaurants. To avoid dealing with this nightmare of a boardwalk, go directly to the port early in the morning if you want to see Las Islas Flotantes. The islands have been on the lake since locals sought to escape the Incas and are made out of a cork-like substance and reeds. Admittedly, they are pretty amazing, but they are impossible to enjoy for what they are. A three hour tour is more than enough; in fact, some ... read more

Friday 2.7.2010 day 261 Buss from Cuzco to Puno on Lake Titicaca We got up at 7am and had breakfast stored our bags and checked out then got the taxi to the bus station and got on the bus from Cuzco to Puno on Lake Titicaca. We were supposed to have a first class bus but the travel agent downgraded us to a local buss which meant it was not a comfy and it stopped lots but it was ok it but we had sales people on the buss trying to sell us stuff. The people selling food were good as it was very cheap and yummy. The landscape was very nice. When we got to Puno we looked for out free hotel pick up but could not find them so we got a taxi that ... read more

We began our journey back from Chile with a collectivo to Tacna, Peru. The driver was so funny, once he found out we spoke English he asked us to translate a lot of useful sayings (ie. going to Arica? Have a safe trip!) and then he had me write them all on a piece of paper for future reference. Some people here go crazy when they get to meet Americans first hand. The ride back to Arequipa though was much less enjoyable. The bus company that we had taken to Tacna wasn´t going back to Arequipa for 2 weeks (I have no idea why!) so we booked tickets with Flores, a bus company we had found online. Bigggggg mistake! They promised us that it was an express bus with no stops but we stopped constantly. Turns ... read more

So from Lima stopping on the plane at Cusco briefly then to Juliaca and a bus to Puno, the city on the Peruvian side of Lake Titicaca, one of the highest navigable lakes in the world and the largest in South America (don't you know, pub quiz gem that!). I got here by plane thanks to the amazing generosity of my uncle. And what a great idea. I've got to say I still don't think I was ready for the whole solo travelling thing if he hadn't set this all up so it's been a good transition. Plus I'm feeling pretty shattered from the altitude so good to have somewhere safe and comfy to rest with a restaurant attached. Puno is completely different to the Lima I know and stay in. A city of incomplete houses ... read more

Last night I fell asleep around 8pm. I was trying to stay awake and read the last 2 pages of my chapter but my eyes kept closing and I kept reading the same sentence over and over... off to bed it was. I woke up almost 11 hours later and we took a 7am taxi to the bus station. From there we caught an 8:30 bus to Puno on the busline 'Julsa' for only S20 (about $7) compared to Cruz del Sur company for S54 (about $35). A woman came onto our bus right before we left and showed us a hotel in Puno that was only S40 (about $14) for twin beds, private bathroom with "hot" water (which we have yet to discover), cable TV, free internet, and free breakfast. She also said someone would ... read more

Hola! Things here are going great - I´m writing you now from Puno, a city in the south of Peru near Lake Titicaca, which will be the site of my next few excursions. But first let me rewind a few days: 3/9 - Me and my canadian posse left our bags at the hostel and boarded the bus with the rest of the crew joining us on this two-day canyon trip. THe crew includes: me,2 canadians, 2 columbianos, 1 venezuelan, 2 argentines, 4 peruvians including one who spents ten years studying in the US and lived in brooklyn for a while, and 3 israelis (you cannot escape them here). Our tour guide (eng/sp) told us abouthe trip as we started off, explaining that we will be going to very high elevations (the highest point was over 4,300 ... read more

jueves, 3 de junio Sad day. Time to leave Bolivia. Met some cool people, loved the locals, great scenery and the budget is well and truly back on track. Even with recent mishaps we'd definitely come back. Not this trip, time for Peru. Home of Machu Picchu. Home of a president re-elected despite destroying the economy so bad in the 80s the currency had to be changed to new soles. Home of bus robberies. Home of more winding roads overlooking cliffs. Home of drivers who don't sleep enough. Best of all, away from altitude. The crossover to the Peruvian border was supremely uneventful, apart from the lady crying with outstretched hand. Not that we thought we would but we have evidently not escaped the poverty. It's a nice way to enter a country on the bus ... read more

Got up early for the first time in a few days, showered, packed and paid up, finally managing to actually leave the hostel after Edwin, the hostal owner, banged on for a while about reviews we could write for him, bad reviews others had written about the hostel and what we should see in Puno. We said good bye to the pussies, grabbed a quick breakfast in the bakery and jumped in a cab to the terminal. Which turned into another nightmare - we got there at 12 as requested, at 12.15 went to try and get through the gates, where the security guy wouldn’t accept our tickets. He then ran around the gate, gave them to the police who wandered off upstairs with them, there was total confusion as one guy was saying that there ... read more
