The Great River Amazon Raft Race". Dieser Artikel sollte unsere Planung total auf ... read more

Alleen per boot of vliegtuig.

Just made it back to Iquitos from our lodge in the jungle and had a brilliant time. The scale of everything is just beyond imagination, the main channel of the river itself must be over a Kilometre wide and the jungle is endless. Visiting in the dry season (only relatively speaking as it rained at some point most days) meant that the tributory that our lodge was on was quite low and the jungle wasn´t too boggy. Being such a large area of unbroken forest, it quickly became apparent that seeing wildlife is not so easy as the wildlife programs have you believe and it was going to require patience, luck and a lot of energy. Each group was assigned a guide, and for better or worse Rach & Me were assigned the top man from ... read more

Luckily we flew from Lima on Tuesday and are now 750 miles away in Iquitos. Are just about to get on a boat to go 100 miles down the Amazon to a lodge for 5 days where we are unlikely to have any means of contact. Having left a cold Cusco early on Tuesday morning, the temperature here is pretty uncomfortable with 90 degrees farenheit and 95% humidity. Had a bit of scare when my backpack did not arrive, leaving me once again with the snowboarding jacket and fleece !! I was extremely relieved that the airline found it in Lima and sent it on the next flight. Adios... read more

. Iquitos I bought a flight from Lima to Iquitos, on the Amazon River, for a little less than $100 then took a city bus to the Lima airport. In every town and city the locals/ bus drivers/ tourists/ tourist offices/everyone tell you not to take a bus because "it´s too dangerous". Because of this I'm sure that the crooks aren´t looking for foreigners on buses. I´ve not had any problems but I could be pushing my luck. A friend travelling through Quito just wrote to tell me he was pickpocketed on the city transport there. Click on any photo to enlarge One must either fly or take a boat to Iquitos. There are no roads. This is the largest city in the world without a road connection to the outside world. My airplane was delayed ... read more

Breakfast at 7am today, since the boat was leaving the lodge at 8. Did I mention how good the food is in Perú? They had awesome french toast, and of course my favorite, platanos. The boatride back to Iquitos was awesome; we stopped at one point to see the pink dolphins! I swear, they are actually pink! You can kinda see the fin of one in the pictures. Not easy to photograph these guys! But click on the pic anyway, if you can zoom in you can see a little. Our 3 star hotel never looked so good! Even though our toilet didn´t flush, and we were told not to flush the toilet paper (again), it was really nice to finally be back in civilization. Since most laundromats are closed on Sundays, and everyone had laundry ... read more

Ok, day 14 at last. Not that day 16 isn´t just a few hours away... Woke up pretty early today, 7:15, to shower and get some breakfast. We had a brief group meeting to discuss the "behavior problem" from the previous night, and the possibility of leaving the lodge a day early. Fortunately the majority of the group decided to stick it out for another day. Like I said, reminded me of camp so I was enjoying the wilderness. Well, for the most part anyway. (Some of the group didn´t like the whole "roughing it" concept) Remember how I mentioned that having high socks would have been beneficial for the weekend in the jungle? Well, it turns out that when I woke up on Saturday, I had a mild rash/irritation on my lower left leg. ... read more

Since we just got back from our "Jungle Weekend," I am going to update all entries. Día 13 (Friday the 13th!!!) Since we were leaving Iquitos pretty early today, Natalie and I had to get up early to pick up our laundry. Even had a few minutes to check email at the cafe! Short busride to the dock where we were met by BF Stephanie, the boat that would be takng us to the Amazon Lodge for the weekend. Gerlo, our guide, gave us a little bit of information on the way but since the motor to the boat was loud he didn´t share too much. So I dozed and listened to my iPod. The ride was about 2 hours. Lunch at the lodge and then a short nap, to regain some energy for the ... read more

Hola, I am happy to say that today was NOWHERE near as eventful as yesterday. I am curious to hear some more feedback as to what you thought about my experiences yesterday... the Amazonian animals and the "robbery." So it is our last day here in Iquitos- tomorrow we leave for a weekend at the Rainforest Lodge. I am thinking I will not have access to internet for the weekend, so the next entry might not come until Sunday or Monday. I know, I know, what are you going to do all weekend without hearing what I am doing? I have faith that most of you will be okay. There are a few I am worried about... not mentioning anyone by name though! Not too much to write about today (insert sigh of relief here) ... read more
