Arriving in the Sacred Valley we noticed two things which had been scarce around the rest of Peru - trees and tourists. I had assumed that we had been above the tree line as we travelled along the Andes through central Peru. It turns out that all the trees were chopped down by the earliest inhabitants and only the less useful, bushy species remained in any number. The severe lack of decent wood had a profound impact in the Spanish conquest of the country. The main reason for the Spanish military successes was the use of mounted cavalry, against which the Inca's had no response at close quarters. Had there been trees available they would have been able to fashion pikes to enable them to spear the horses, out of reach of the swinging swords. The ... read more

Well folks, this blog is about a day trip I did on Thursday May 1st as it was a public holiday in Peru for labour day. They seem to celebrate lots of different 'days' here with fireworks and parties which last all week. Even though this was only 6 days ago, I am finding it very difficult to remember......must be that Alzheimer's setting in lol! I made my way to the Plaza de Armas by 8.30 to meet Edgar my tours manager. Edgar is a great guy who works really hard at providing trips to those staying at Patricia's. Edgar is not always easy to understand as he talks English really quickly and while you think you are getting a lot of detail, it's not until you are on the tours that you realise that there ... read more

Hello again to all, once again a lot of time between entries as we had no internet once we left Cusco. To catch up- Elliot felt a bit better the next day (just in time for New Year´s Eve), but still a bit shakey, so we took it pretty easy, we explored the city of Cusco, San Blas, the markets, and went to a few interesting museums. The day went by pretty fast and we went to a cultural show with music, and dancing from the Andes, Incas etc... very interesting. We went to have a few drinks before new year´s over looking the plaza and tried a maracuya sour (yum!). We were also both chatted up by a very drunk local man who bought us beer (very odd)... but after decided we hadn´t been drugged ... read more

Buonasera, Am back in Cuzco, on a warm Saturday night, after a full day exploring in the Sacred Valley. I visited many towns and villages including Urubamba, Coya and Pisac. Having a driver whom I could ask to stop whenever I wanted was a real bonus. The whole valley is spectacular and the people very welcoming.....I hope this comes through in the images. I was fortunate to be in Pisac when they were having a childrens race event. Just today I shot more than 500 images...... Im keeping this short tonight and let the images speak for themselves. In the morning Im up at 5.30 for the 10 hour bus trip to Puno and lake Titicaca......which is at a higher altitude than Cuzco......tonight I saw the Hotel having to administer oxygen to a guest!!!!!!!!!....... Buona Notte... ... read more

Hello All- Internet is a little scatchy here and I don´t have much time so this is short but more to come. We made it to Cusco. It is absolutly amazing. Words cannot descibe what it was like watching the Andes come into view as they would peak out above the clouds. Cusco is nesstled inbetween the muntians as is every city here. As we came in to land, swooping around the mountian tops, tears came to my eyes. We are in Urabamba, the Sacred Valley of the Incas. Sadly i must go but I´ll write more later. Love you all!!! Adios... read more
