Wake-up time: 5:30am... arrrgghhh. But we had to get back to Machu Picchu to see the sunrise! So we ate a quick breakfast at the hotel, waited in line for the bus back to Machu Picchu, and took the long, winding, narrow, and muddy road up to Puente Ruinas station, the starting point for our hike. But where was the sun? Ohhh there it is... hiding behind all that fog and those clouds... so much for a sunrise hike today! But, no matter, we still planned to hike Waynu Picchu, a popular climbing point with a great view of Machu Picchu. Fortunately for me, the line to get into the trail was too long, so we hiked Intipunku instead. This was fortunate because even though we would end at the same altitude (9000 ft above sea ... read more

Well it has been 2 days since completing the Inca Trail and I am still buzzing from the experience, I am unable to put my feelings and incredible experience in words, it is something you must do yourself, to understand the emotions that I am feeling from this journey. I can tell you what I saw and the people who shared this with me though, Day 1 started at Otalyatambo when we meet the other 11 people who were travelling with us, we were introduced to them on the bus, and there was a great silence, we thought this group were very unfriendly at first, but later realised like us they were unsure of what lay ahead of us the next 4 days, as we started hiking we discovered that we were travelling with a ... read more

Today - we pack up our bags and lock them up at the backpacker hostel and only have our small sathels to have with us, we are hoping to get to Aguas Calientes by tonight. We have bought no tickets and some to the other backerpackers are advising us not to go without buying a ticket from Cusco and they are sold out. We are young, foolish and brave =) We catch a local bus from Cusco to Urubamba. In Urubamba we jump of one bus (combi) and into another heading to Ollantaytambo. The ride is always lovely in Peru, sitting high up in the Andes. We arrive at Ollantaytambo and decide to walk around and grab a bit to eat for lunch. It started raining just as we got of the bus so we started ... read more

Alright, we are still in Cusco, we should have been on the road to Puno by now, but there are big strikes around Puno and Juliaca, and the roads are closed to both buses and train. Since they told us the movements are getting a little strong, we re playing it safe here until it clears up... We have had an amazing ... read more

At last, this blog is finally going to completely catch me up to the time that I am writing this. YEAH! So...Aquas Calientes. I got to have my first real train ride ever, and the views were amazing although somewhat spoiled by the power lines running along the Urubamba river. About 5 kilometers from Aquas Calientes is a hydroelectric station on the river and the power is run back up stream to the Sacred Valley area. We did get a nice surprise on the train as we paid for the cheap ¨backpacker¨train, but we actually got the mid-priced Vistadome train, and therefore were served a nice snack of a ham and cheese sandwich and chocolate brownie with orange juice. It was especially nice since we didn´t have breakfast that morning. (Hope we get the same ... read more

At last! The day of our big ride....and I have been queasy off and on all night and into the morning. However, I was determined to make it, and after some pepto and tea, I felt well enough to give my best effort. We got to the resort about 45 min early, relaxed and enjoyed the warmth of the sun and the scenery. Once we met Moesis, Stef explained that we were fine with the change in drivers, but that we were not sure what the problem with the payment was. Moesis said he would speak to Senovio and get back to us. We got the same horsese (good for me, bad for Stef :(....), but 2 of the ranch hands, Felix and Jesus, went with us. WOW, what a difference! Felix was the guide, ... read more

Hola Amigos! We are sorry, it has been a long time since we updated our little journal. So, we have been here for one week now and a lot has happened since then. We have explored Cusco and the Sacred Valley, stumbled upon Corpus Christi celebrations and and my cousin Kristin, hiked 49 km with the highest peak of 13,779 ft, arrived at Machu Picchu to see the sun rise and wash away the pain in our legs with Cusquenas... a local beer! Cusco and the Sacred Valley are beautiful! We spent three days simply exploring the city of Cusco and the seemingly endless ruins that surround it. The culture in this area of Peru is so vibrant, with a mix of Inca and Spanish traditions. On our second day in Cusco we went on ... read more

It had to be done. Ever since the Dragoman truck experience, which had 2 postcards with roasted guinnea pig on it, we knew that it had to be ordered and consumed in Peru!! The saying is, a picture says more than a 1000 words, so we´ll let the photos do the talking, comic book style !! One main reason why I waited till AFTER the Machu Picchu trek, was that I simply didn´t want to risk severe food poisoning BEFORE the trek. Wasn´t too bad in the end, and didn´t taste too bad either, a bit like a grilled rabbit...... but not sure if my niece will appreciate the look on my face next time I meet her pets... ... read more

Preface this with that I love traveller's towns sometimes. The happy hours, the cybercafes, the travellers everywhere to chat with. Udaipur was like that, and San Ignacio in Belize too. Today we took the train to Aguas Calientes from Cusco. It was a long ride with a few beautiful vistas, but mostly territory we had covered before in our Sacred Valley tour yesterday. But at the end, we began seeing mountains covered in green foliage, misty mountaintops, and descended into the cloud forest that surrounds Machu Picchu. We were lucky enough to have gotten a hotel at the last minute - I had a pending reservation from two weeks ago that I never followed up on -we visited their office last night and ensured that we had two "matrimonial" rooms set up for us. When we ... read more

Ladies and Gents... ... read more
