Ollantaytambo Ruins
View from our restaurant window. Today - we pack up our bags and lock them up at the backpacker hostel and only have our small sathels to have with us, we are hoping to get to Aguas Calientes by tonight. We have bought no tickets and some to the other backerpackers are advising us not to go without buying a ticket from Cusco and they are sold out. We are young, foolish and brave =) We catch a local bus from Cusco to Urubamba. In Urubamba we jump of one bus (combi) and into another heading to Ollantaytambo. The ride is always lovely in Peru, sitting high up in the Andes. We arrive at Ollantaytambo and decide to walk around and grab a bit to eat for lunch. It started raining just as we got of the bus so we started running in the direction with the most shelter from the rain. Arrived at the fantastic little restaurant overlooking the Ollantaytambo ruins. The ruins from our window seat were pretty impressive. Lunch was excellent as was the view.
After lunch we set of on a long walk to the railway station, hoping to buy a ticket to Aguas Calientes. Had a real hard time communicating
Ollantaytambo Ruins
Still more view of the amazing fortress on the hilltop. with the ticket guy. Other tourist was there and spoken fluent spanish, she translated and told us the there was no ticket available now. The story seemed to get more complicated. She finally bought her ticket and left. We tired asking again and managed to get two return tickets on the vistadome train (for $US77 each), not a bad price compared to what we had heard others had paid for. The best thing us it was leaving in an hour =)). So we sat and enjoyed the scenery and made videos on our jounrney and pose for a few pictures while we waited.
The train ride was extremely comfortable with meals provided. The scenery along the breath taking. We arrived in Aguas Calientes withour incident. Explored the town and checked into our accomodation which was right in the town square. After checking in we explored a bit more, had dinner and bought bus tickets to Machu Pinchu. Slept early as tomorrow was going to be a long day and our bus was leaving at 5am.
