After one day of rest from climbing El Misti, i set about climbing chachani, which is a 6080 meter (thats 19,800 feet) peak with three other people and a guide. three additional participants got severe altitude sickness at the base camp (5400 meters) and had to go back down before the summit attempt. this was the highest elevation i´ve ever attained and it was some pretty slow going with some pretty thin air up there. several parts of the top required crampons and ice axe for stability for rather lengthy sections and on the return trip one of my crampons came off my foot, having shaken loose one of the two screws that held them together. lucky for me it happened within a couple hundred feet of the end of the glacier so i make it ... read more
