Today was a great day as we climbed to an altitude of 4900m on our way to Colca Canyon. On the way we all stopped at a local shop to get some coca leaves to chew on which apparently helps with altitude sickness. I wasn't taking any chances (after what I had heard high altitude can do to you) so I bought the coca leaves, coca candy, coca tea, coca biscuits, coca toffee etc... basically everything they sold that was coca! It did the trick though. Chewing coca leaves was odd though as it makes your mouth go numb. Whatever works... We drove for 6 hours and passed Chichani mountain and into the national reserve of Chivay, which was 4900m above sea level. We saw lots of Alpacas, Llamas, Vicuanas, and Vizachas in the wild and ... read more

Blogger Bec This morning we drove from Arequipa to the amazing Colca Canyon - a beautiful drive spoiled a little by our REAL dose of altitude sickness. About 15 minutes into our 6 hour journey, we stopped at a shop to buy some coca leaves - a natural remedy to alievate the symptoms of altitude sickness. They taste horrible (like a wheatgrass shot only stronger and without the OJ chaser!) and you have to bundle them up with a piece of soft ash in order to digest the juices properly. The leaves kickstart your saliva glands, making your mouth water. They also make your gums, tongue and cheeks numb which didn´t sit well with me - I felt like I couldn´t breathe! Still, I dutifully chewed away as the thought of getting really sick petrified ... read more

¡Hola! I am writing this in an internet cafe in Puno, the alt-gr key is broken, so I cannot use apostrophes at all. Or the "at" key. Grrr. I last left you waiting to go for dinner in Arequipa. We went to a really nice restaurant, which we were all very impressed with. I think the fixed menu was S/.27 and it was totally worth it. I had the Alpaca Carapaccio to start, followed by the stuffed chicken and steamed vegetables, with chocolate pancakes with ice cream for dessert. It was all fantastic, but the alpaca stood out as the best dish of the evening. Sometime during the evening we all decided that we could have spend another day in Arequipa, the city had grown on us over the course of the day there. We got ... read more

First leg of the journey was from Cusco to Arequipa...a long journey of approximately 9 hours on a bus, since I had never travelled on a long haul bus, I thought I would splash out and take a sleeper bus 'Cruz del Sur' not bad, it was cheap and comfortable. The bus left Cuzco at 8.30pm and would approximately arrive at 6am the next morning. I slept pretty well and upon awakening found myself in Arequipa. Freezing cold I waited for my driver to pick me up which unfortunately he didnt..luckily at Arequipa bus station there is an extreamly helpful lady who works behind the Tourist information desk and she was a life saver, happened to know the guy who was supposed to pick me up and called him..within minutes a driver was there to pick ... read more

Monday 28th Jan - Day 6 We headed off to Chivay in the Andes, via the highest point we will reach on this tour at 4910m. In Chivay we went for a short trek and then to some hot springs. After this we went for a local meal with our guide Jesus, and watched the local moquito dance which involved whipping the audience! The air is very thin now as we are constantly above 3500m. Tuesday 29th Jan - Day 7 Up very early to drive to the Colca Canyon, the deepest Canyon in the world. The Canyon is 3200m deep in some places and it also lies in the bottom of a valley so it appears extremely deep. This is a great place to see Andean Condors so we waited at the Canyon for a ... read more

This morning we got to Arequipa. We decided to go visit the museum where they keep the remains of an Inca child that was sacrificed to the volcanoes, and then head to Chivay, which is a small village that is closer to the Canyon del Colca. Arequipa is a really nice city, with lots of colonial buildings, and it kind of reminds me of Cuenca. The museum was quite interesting, and the mummy (it was mummifies because of being frozen in the ice, and it's still kept in a transparent refrigerator) is really impressive. In the afternoon we got to Chivay, where we found a cheap hostel. Tomorrow morning we're going to Cruz del Condor, where we will hopefully see some (you guessed it) condors, and then we'll head back to Arequipa, and take the night ... read more

ChivayTravel a rough, rutted road through high plains flanked by extensive Inca and pre-Inca terracing that goes on for kilometres, en route to the Colca Canyon—one of the deepest canyons in the world. Our first stop is Chivay, a picturesque village near the canyon, where we can take a dip in the local hot thermal baths, watch live Andean music at a peña or go for a llama steak. ... read more
