The main thing the tourists do here in Arequipa is go to Colca caynon to see the Condors - so I went to Cotahasi. Cotahuasi is the deepest caynon in the world, and bigger than the Grand Caynon in the States. It is about 12 hours in a bus, twice the distance to Colca caynon, and for that reason a whole lot less visited. And after blowing my spare change on climbing Misti, I decieded a few days free camping was in order. I didn´t really know where I was going, I just thought I would follow the river down through the caynon, and if I couldn´t find any easy way out after a few days I would simply turn around and hike back out. I arrived in Cotahuasi at about 2am and slept in the ... read more

Lots has happened - We had to avoid the lesbians in Arequipa who were instant on wanting to take us home!!!??, stayed at a Peruvian concentration camp where you are woken at 5.30 in the morning!, we chilled in the thermal springs of Chivay, saw Condors & the worlds deepest canyon and in between we all got very drunk...When I´ve sourced the pics i´ll write a proper update! :-) Alex is currently walking the Inca trail (with no facilities!, she had to leave her hair straighteners in the hotel!) and I´m on a week long Spanish course. 4 hours a day plus 2 hours homework....its like having a job!!!??? - Not! :-)... read more

We weren´t turned back or dropped at any borders and arrived in Arequipa, freezing cold (Just add another quid on the ticket price and use the heating!) at 4 am. This isn´t the liveliest hour of the day here, nor was I feeling at my liveliest. We managed to cajole a bus station cafe into giving us coffees, then later breakfast, before it seemed a reasonable hour to be checking into a hostal without paying for that night but only the coming night. Put ourselves straight to bed. You know how when your feet are cold it feels like there are pebbles tucked under your toes? Well, that feeling persisted in me for the entire hour and a half I stayed in bed. The strikes didn´t stop us getting here, but they do exist, and we ... read more

Argentina won and yesterday we all bought football strip T-shirts for about 2gbp! (i think they saw us coming) That night we went out to an itallian place on the beach where they did great ice cream and they had Ice Magic! I hadnt had it in so long so i was well chuffed! Were in Arequipa just now in Peru. Its a quick stopover between Chile and Cusco. We shared a collecivo with the hot surfer dude we met at the cool hostel in arica. the collectivo took us over the border and then we got a bus to Arequipa. The bus journey was quite interesting as they played dubbed films really loud. They showed "White Chicks" a crappy american film that was so awful I could still appreciate it even though it was in ... read more

That is what they shout out at the bus stations as you are waiting for your bus and you seriously want to thump someone.... Arequipa, Arequipa, ARRREEEEQUUUIPPAAAA! It is only 8 in the morning and you know it is going to be a long day! So it was. They have a habit of lying about the length of bus journeys here. We were assured time and again that it was a mere 5 hours. Even if you look at them dubiously because your guidebook (aka The Bible) tells you it is more than 8, they insist on 5. So eight hours later we roll into Arequipa. Got ourselves to the Plaza des Armas (all main squares are called this in Peru) and installed ourselves in a little hostal 2 blocks from the main square. Oh how ... read more

With the Inca Trail done and dusted, I was focused on hiking-type challenges and I had heard a lot about Arequipa´s Colca Canyon trek. This is a three day jobbie with two of those days comprising a very steep descent and ascent of the canyon walls. It was a gamble to travel there as this strenuous activity was the only thing calling me and my knee was giving me a hard time, even on small staircases. With a shrug and a touch of my lucky charm I jumped on an overnight bus from Cusco. After a freezing night on the road, we rolled into Peru´s Second City and I checked into a hotel recommended over beers in Cusco. It was a bit dark and dingy there and they were all set to fumigate, asking me to ... read more

Notes on travelling sensibly...If you read your travel guides carefully, the sensible way to travel in high altitudes is to take it at 1000 metres every two days to let yourself acclimatise properly! However, as you would imagine if you know us at all... we travel as we do life!... trying to do way too much in way to short a time!... so we started in Lima at 0 metres above sea level... we had climbed to 4910 m in 20 hours (all by land I might add!) Dave of course didn't even notice the height apart from a little bit of insomnia... I, however, had blinding headaches followed by nausea followed by insomnia!! great combination at the best of times...but when you are on a bus or supposedly walking around and enjoying the view it ... read more

Invite PETA to Arequipa Peru to experience a great sport - bull fighting - no not man vs. beast, but beast vs. beast... An absolutely enlightning experience which has a great correleation and application towards mankind - for instance, the bull that makes the most noise before the fight - is usually not the victor. Photos to follow. When a society does not have a massive technology base - it resorts to more humanistic endeavors - OK bull fighting may not be humanistic perse. however, arts, music, long lunches, spending time with family and friends. The world has a great many inhabitants which are worthy, loving, suffering, contributing and accepting of their fate. Then there are those which feel the world should be the way they want it to be - people should have a certain ... read more

S 16º 23.578 / W 071º 30.984 From the somber mood on Good Friday, the Arequipeños came out in full procession from the main Cathedral to one just down the road. The faithfull crowds, with candle´s in hand outlined the route which the Cross of Christ was to lead, along with the Virgin Mary - in a much more elaborate and magestic promendade. All of this, with the masses and the elite of the Roman catholic Church in Arequipa in tow... Along the procession route, the police, national guard, explosives details, fire brigade accompanied the wide variety of food, beverage and other assorted vendors - in an almost carnival-like ambiance. Sunday morning four years ago, I found myself at Notredame in Paris for the Easter Mass. It seemed like the passion of Christ had left the ... read more
