I spent the last few days in day trips around Huaraz. On Tuesday (yesterday) I went mountain biking, with two guys we met on the trip to Laguna 69. Efrat was not feeling well, and I don't think she likes bikes anyway, so she didn't join us. We took a bus up to Punta Callan, which is just a sign in the middile of the road, but there's a great view of the Cordillera Blancas (the mountains around Huaraz) from there. Then we rode down to Huaraz on our bikes, which was really fun. On Wednesday (today) I went to Laguna Churup, another beautiful laguna in the area. Efrat wanted to go rock climbing, so she didn't come, but I went with four other people form our hostel. The way to the laguna is great. It's ... read more

Hi again, This entry is already completely Peruvian. As I wrote last time, we crossed the border to Peru in a bus last Monday. Our first destination (with the said bus) was Piura, a medium size city in the northern coast area of Peru (but not exactly on the shore). Apparently the northern coast of Peru is a flat desert that looks a bit like the northern part of the Negev (Piura = Beer Sheva). One new thing that they have in Peru and not in Ecuador is something called mototaxi, which is a motorcycle with some additional wheels and seats that serves as a taxi. It looks very funny, like an Indian riksha (you can see in the pictures). In Piura we only spent the night in some dump (but cheap) hostel, enjoyed its central ... read more

We went to Laguna 69 today, a beautiful laguna at an altitude of 4450m. We left at 6:30 in the morning, for the 3 hour drive there. First we saw two big lagunas from our bus, which were very nice, and then we continued to the start of our hike. We started walking at an altitude of 3800m. The path has two climbs, a long easy one at first, in which I felt great, and a shorter one, that's a little more steep, and of course higher, which also went fine, but was much more difficult. I won't really describe it in detail, just look at the pictures to get an idea of what the area looks like. Our group was 24 people, 22 of them from Israel (the trip was organized by our hostel, which ... read more

We´ve been in Huaraz for 3 days already, and still, we didn´t do much, mostly because of Yom Kippur. Efrat decided to fast, so on Erev Yom Kippur (yesterday), we made a Seuda Mafseket (and by we I mean Efrat made it, and I tried not to get in the way), when all the other Israelis, which is almost everyone in the hostel, went to the Jewish House here (kind of like Beit Habad, but not exactly). We ended up with only two Americans, so I explained to them why we're eating at 16:00, and why the hostel is empty. Today, Efrat stayed in the hostel, and I went with two other girls to some hot springs they have around here. It was a nice way to spend the morning. We almost booked ourselves on the ... read more

We got to Huaraz today, after a long night on the bus. Although the seats were comfortable, the guy next to me snored (louder than the bus, that´s saying something), so I didn´t sleep too well. We got to a hostel that was recommended to us by a Belgian guy we met in the Galapagos, and it turns out it´s full of Israelis. There are so many here, that the woman at the grocery store next to the hostel knows how to tell prices in Hebrew. But it´s a very nice place, and there´s lots of people here, so it´s fun. We don´t have any definite plans yet, but we´ll probably go on the 4 day Santa Cruz trek on Sunday. We´ve been too tired to make plans. I took some pictures today from the hostel, ... read more

Got the overnight bus to Huaraz, which was 8 hours of driving up and up and up.... to 3091 metres!!! Arrived at 6am thursday, just as the sun was rising! It is such a beautiful place and the scenery is just unbelievable. Managed to negotiate a taxi to the hostal with a little help from a spanish couple I met on the bus. Felt a little breathless but nothing too exciting! Had a quick sleep and then had my first cup of peruvian coca tea in the lounge upstairs. Had a wander round huaraz, such a lovely place and is a lot nicer than Lima. Went round a few tour companies checking tours to go on the Santa Cruz 4 day trek. Weather is so beatiful, although it is really really bright up here! Had a ... read more
