Clases de Español are going great. Juan Carlos, our teacher, is great and very patient with us. We have been surfing every day between classes and the surf has been great. Malia´s longest rides ever! They are baby waves, but still very fun. Yesturday we (us, two canadians, and a dane) went on a canoe tour through Isla de Corezon. It´s a mangrove island containing the largest population of frigate birds on earth. They are the ones that puff up the red-balloon-like air sac on their chest to attract the ladies. What an awesome experience! The guide we hired, loaded us all up into his dug out canoe (made from one cedar log) and we headed across the bay/estuary toward the mangroves. Two people had to bail water the whole time to keep us from sinking. ... read more

well we made it to the coast. from 9, 000+ ft, to sea level it gets a lot warmer. probably atleast high 80´s to 90´s, and the sun is intense...we are already on our second bottle of sunblock and probably will buy another soon! We learned today from our friend Alex that we saw the Iranian president at the equator. when we were there last week there were a group of well dressed men speaking in a language none of us could recognize, so Alex asked them where they were from. Then a few days ago he saw on the news that the Iranian president was visiting Ecuador and was at the equator. So, at the same time the Iranian president, Peruvian models and us were all at the equator, that will never ever happen again! ... read more

After three days in Canoa and remembering our very long journey from Quito, we decided that a night bus from Bahia de Caracas would be nicer than the day bus we took to St. Vincente. Plus we heard that this town was an "ecocity" and we wanted to see what it was all about. We took a bus from Canoa to St. Vincente in the morning. We met a nice gentleman who helped us to catch the water taxi across the bay to Bahia. We spent the day walking around the peninsula and watching the amazing waves hitting the shore. We ate some great Italian food and ice cream. Kerensa ate cerviche and it was great also. The pelicans clumsily diving into the water kept us entertained for hours. Janel and Kerensa collected more sea shells. ... read more

We (Janel, Tony and Kerensa) went to Canoa for three days. We wanted a relaxing trip on the beach. Tony wanted to try surfing and he did. We thought the trip to Canoa would take 6 hours, but in actuality via St. Vincente it took over 10 hours. It was an uncomfortable bus and it was hot. Once we got to St. Vincente we took another 20 minute bus to Canoa where we were dropped off in what seemed the middle of no where. A very nice person could recognize we had no idea where to go and helped us find our hostel (only one block from the beach and $5 a person). The first day on the beach Kerensa and Janel collected shells. We had a deal that we would only keep 10 of the ... read more

Arrived in Guayaquil and stayed the night there. The next morning we booked tickets to the Galapagos for the folowing day. It´s hot and not a whole lot to do. Stayed at the Velez just off the plaza. ¡Feliz año nuevo! Happy new year! Frohes neues Jahr!

Thinking back on my service trip to Duran, I recall many beautiful moments with even more beautiful people. Behind the Gauderia! That was more of a joke about the year long volunteer and one of my fellow retreatents, but the real pleasure working in this daycare was the bright smiles of the little kids or the herd of 4 year olds that grabbed hold of any free limb that wasn't occupied by another of their peers. I discovered that Old Mc Donald had some pretty crazy animals on his farm....who would have thought a hippo, gorilla and giraffe could live in harmony with the chickens and the cows! I tried to capture a few of these rascals on my camera, but they were more interested in pursuing their climb. I played tea party with a ... read more

So my trip to the Coast began around five in the morning, not that I was aware of the fact being extremley drunk and pretty much falling into the car and going into a deep coma sleep. Pablo who runs the Apu Inty Spanish school I currently study at was the designated driver with his girlfriend Sheir from America playing Shotgun with me in the back. The first half of the journey was a semi conscious awareness that the air pressure was changing along with an increase in temperature as we drove down towards the coast. Consciencess came in the form of a jolt and the knowledge that three of four tyres had just been burst hitting a crater in the road, something that VW car is less than capable of contending with. Luckily the repair ... read more
