We have decided to take a well earned break from all our hard work and so are off to the beach! Got the first bus at nine in the morning to go to Guayaquil via Cajas National Park. It looks really beautiful and we are going to have to get there at some point. Probably not that soon though as the torrential rain of the last few days had caused a landslide. Really quite scary creeping round mountain passes through tonnes of mud next to the edge of the cliff where the barrier had been swept away - not the most reassuring thing in the world! Anyway, got to Guayaquil which was horribly humid and overall didn't look like somewhere we want to visit in a hurry. Didn't manage to get on a bus to ... read more

We thought that the beach with friends was a better idea than staying in Cuenca during carnival. Ecuadorians like to throw water balloons, buckets of water and douse everyone with big squirt guns. And a big ball-headed gringo makes a great target. So off to the beach we go. From Cuenca to Olon the road goes through the Cajas around Guayaquil and up the Ruta del Sol. Driving down out of the Cajas is a spectacular trip with picturesque views at every turn. About 90 minutes out of Cuenca is Restaurante Mirador de los Andes, it is a little road side café that does a omelets for breakfast or a nice three course lunch. On a clear day you can see the Volcano Chimborazo at 20700 ft sticking its snow capped head above the clouds. ... read more

So my trip to the Coast began around five in the morning, not that I was aware of the fact being extremley drunk and pretty much falling into the car and going into a deep coma sleep. Pablo who runs the Apu Inty Spanish school I currently study at was the designated driver with his girlfriend Sheir from America playing Shotgun with me in the back. The first half of the journey was a semi conscious awareness that the air pressure was changing along with an increase in temperature as we drove down towards the coast. Consciencess came in the form of a jolt and the knowledge that three of four tyres had just been burst hitting a crater in the road, something that VW car is less than capable of contending with. Luckily the repair ... read more

Well hello again...just making our last entry before xmas time...which in Ecuador is celebrated in the evening of Christmas Eve...so tonight we will be eating langoustine with about 50 other Ecuadorians and then tomorrow will be making sacrificial mermaid totems to burn on the christmas day bonfire we are going to have on the beach, with our bloated seafood bellies We have bought each other a kinder egg to open on Xmas day and will wait to see if Santa Claus pops down the chimney we have conveniently set alight in await of his arrival in our beach lodge..we await with baited breath. Life has been good over here, we have discovered that all the other gringos that we have not met on our travels (we´ve hardly seen any!) have moved to Montanita to all live ... read more

Montanita is Ecuadors equivallant of Newquay. It isnt full of chavs and amusement arcades, is still reasonably undeveloped, but the majority of whats there is for tourists. It is more expensive than Canoa and we only manage to find one place that serves our now beloved Merienda. While we were there the surf was almost completely flat. When a small wave did appear at high tide, it was crowded and full of longboarders. Something we have managed to avoid sharing the lineup with so far on the trip. Montanita is also notorious for having no sun. The climate in Ecuador is strange. It isnt often sunny, but when it is, its very hot. It never rains, but usually the sky is filled with dark grey clouds. One morning we were on the beach when a Colombian ... read more

After the exhausting jungle trip Miguel and I agreed that we needed the beach and sunshine again. The girls mentioned that they were planning to go to this little beach city on the coast and mentioned that we should go with them. Even though it was a bit of a back-track, we didn’t care because it was the long weekend here, and apparently everyone rolls into this little town. So, after returning to Baños for one last night, we found a bus to Guayaquil which would host a connector bus to Montañita. We decided to take a day bus for once so we could see the Andes as we traveled through them. We left Baños at 11am. The bus we were on was just as weak as the last 8 lol. Whatever though, we’re on ... read more

We decided to take a bus from with the 2 swiss girls that we met during our jungle trip, to Montańita, a small surf village off the coast of Ecuador that is known to have a wild night life. We found that to be true when we arrived at midnight after a LONG trip from Bańos, which included having to switch buses at a crazy chaotic bus terminal in Guayaquil, and being stranded in Salinas before taking a cab to our destination of Montańita. We arrived in Montańita to a argentinian hippy with dreads greeting us and offering to take us to a nearby hostel. We dropped our bags in our rooms and went out to get some ribs at a nearby sandy beach-hut restaurant. Walking through Montańita at night was crazy at first, dozens of ... read more

So when we got to the bus station in Guyayaquil, it was super busy, there were so many people. Even before we went to buy our tickets, like 10 different people asked us if we wanted a ride, yeahhhh kinda sketchy, but we got a direct car ride with a nice couple from Guayaquil for like 13$ each, the bus ride was like 5$ but yeah we wanted to get there ASAP... so they took us there in like 2 hours, kinda psycho driver... but yeah it was pretty OK. So as soon as we got there... me and Darren looked for a hostal, I wanted one on the beach so we took the first one we could find. So that night we got some food, drinks and so on and we partied on the beach. ... read more

My recent silence can be attributed to my location in a land completely neglected by time. Oh, it's modern enough... but good luck finding someone with a watch. Montanita is a hippy town deserving of the highest regard in hippy circles. Giant bongs walk down the beach, cradled casually in their barefoot carriers suntanned arms. People wake at noon and ask what time it is when they get to the breakfast restaurant. I, too, was guilty of this. See, my small backpack was robbed on the overnight bus from Trujillo to Tumbes, Peru. My clock was in the bag. I never had to worry about the time until I left magical Montanita. I spent my first two days there waking late and taking surf lessons. I rode a bike down the road with my friend and ... read more
