I would like to sincerely apologise for the last advertisement, i obviously offended someone as i have one less subscriber than before! In my last week in Ecuador i realised i hadn't been to the coast so i took one final road trip via Cuenca to buy panama hats. I only had a few days on the coast and i knew immediately the one place i had to go as it had been recommended by most travellers i had met...Montañita. Montañita was first recommended to me by a trio of Israeli travellers in Colombia. At that point i was a bit skeptical as i had realised from my last trip that when a group of Israelis recommend a place it is invariably because there are a)lots of Israelis who live there or b)lots of marijuana there. ... read more

My next stop was Montañita - holiday resort, party town and the surfing Mecca of Ecuador. It was a cool place, and was filled with a mix of surfer dudes, travellers, dreadlocked crusties and hippy-chicks. It was also a town which INFURIATED me to the point which I wanted to batter someone over the head with a blunt instrument. Basically, no-one in this town seemed to have any concept of change (as in money). Imagine going into a corner shop in England and buying something for a pound with a ten pound note, or even a five pound note. You would get change, no problem. But not here. If you don´t have the right change, no chance. On one particular day, I got turned away from four consecutive shops because they had no change. Sorry if ... read more

I’m starting to like Quito a bit more these days. The people are all extremely friendly and I find myself sad to be leaving. The last couple of days in Quito I visited el Teleferico and La Basilica. El Teleferico is a spot at about 13,000 ft (4,000 m) in the mountains above Quito. There are little trams that take visitors to the top and all of Quito can be seen from there. It’s a huge city. I didn’t realize how big it was until I was up there. There was also a big hub-bub at el Teleferico because the Vice-President of Ecuador was there! On Thursday night, the school I am studying at had a dinner for the students - Mexican food :). I finally had the chance to meet the other students. I’ve ... read more

In the surfy hippy town of Montanita we tried to get some more sunshine but to no avail. Of course being the fun-loving gals we are we managed to have enjoy ourselves. We picked up a local surfy hippy stoner called John who obligingly became our guide. Our first tour was of a lovely church up on the headland looking over the Pacific Ocean where we were hoping to see some humpback whales splashing by. No such luck, however during our tour Cazz got given a holy cross from the missionary and i got shat on by a bird. Some devine intervention. That night our tour guide picked up the pace a little and took us to the funniest night club we've ever encountered (and you know between us we've encountered many). It was right on ... read more

Helloooo there, Have spent the last few weeks since we finished volunteering on the cost. Took an 11 hour bus from quito down to Puerto Lopez (although due to a truck getting tipped over by a landslide it too bout 13hrs). Puerto Lopez is basically a very small fishing town not much to do apart from the marine national park about 10 miles north. First day we spent on the beach, which was practically deserted! both managed to get sunburnt me the front of my legs from ankles to knees and aimee the back of her knees. Took a day trip to Isla de Plata, which is basically a poor man´s Galapagos. Loads of birds there, mainly different types of boobies (blue footed ones are definitely the best.) also loads of frigate birds and few more ... read more

Well this weekend we were supposed to go to Los Frailes - one of the most beautiful unspoilt beaches in Ecuador..unfortunately we had to spend a night in Montañita and well never left..! As it was a public holiday here, we had the Thursday off work as well! Very exciting. Arrived at Montañita on the Thurs night and went back to our good old hostal again. Went out in search of food and found Tiki´s which became a bit of a haunt for us over the weekend! Pretty much collapsed straight away after though - 9 hours on buses takes it out of me still! Were up bright and early on Friday and were then joined by Tamsin, Claire and her english bloke, Dave and then Imogen for brekkie! Had a proper crew going on! So ... read more

Well we started the trip today with the intention of getting to Los Frailes, an absolutley beautiful beach in a National Park. Slight problem being that, as it is a National Park, you can't sleep there - you have to stay three hours away and go up for the day. That, the fact it was a further five hours than the beaches we usually go to and we'd have to pay the National Park fee put us off enough to decide on just going back to Montañita. Ended up in the same hostel as last time and then went out in search of food which was very good although the waiter decided to sit down with us to take the order, forget us for quite some time and then admit to being 'so high' as ... read more

25 March, Sunday... Oh my. I am so hungover today. Why did I drink all that rum? Why? I spent most of the day sleeping then decided to head out to the old town (Quito viejo) to see some of the churches and take some photos. The old town is pretty but there's not much to do there other than just wander. Feeling slightly better I braved the drink once more and had a couple of beers and even ended up dancing a bit, until 2. 26 March, Monday... Mmmmm things might start to get complicated. Thom's talking seriously about not going to Venezuela and rerouting to see New York. I can see his point, it would work out very cheap to go to New York now rather than as a separate trip from England, ... read more
