Hola! Where to begin? Well, I left off on Saturday afternoon. After I came to the internet café, I shopped a little more in the market and then we all met up for a late lunch at Buena Vista, this really good, very touristy restaurant. Then we went back to the hostal to talk and such. Honestly I can´t remember all that we did Saturday afternoon, it was really just a relaxing day. I think I took a nap, hehe. Then Saturday night we went back to Buena Vista and watched a movie because they have a TV and we were the only ones there so they let us. We watched Closer (más acerca, in Spanish) which was a really odd movie and I don´t know if I liked it or not, honestly. Oh, and we ... read more

Fuya Fuya, Quichua for Point Point, is a mountain in the Lagos area close to Otavalo. Its two prominent points give it its name. We drove to Fuya Fuya with the group of volunteers and Christian, Pablo, Grace, and Max who are members of Gilberto´s family. The drive in the jeep was bumpy and, since most of us didn’t know exactly what we were doing, we were quite positive about what was to come. When we got to the first lake, it was midday and the ripples of the lake were made more visible by the sun’s gleaming rays. All this was deceiving since the next three hours would be a just as gruesome as the climb up Mount Kenya five years back. Apart from the difference in length of the hikes, the vegetation was ... read more

Another week has passed in this lovely paradise of Alto Choco, in good company with people from all over the world. This week we have done exhausting work: chopping wood with machetes, transporting rocks, soil or wood; as well as interesting work: reforestation, making lokal bags, watering the worms, learning how to make tortillas fritas, milking the cows, making beds, treeclimbing and horseback riding. So you see - you don't really get bored here! The week passed enormously fast an for the WE we went to Apuela, the "center" of the mountain region close to Otavalo, after a hard good-bye to some of the volunteers. Saturday night there was supposed to be a great party in the school of Apuela according to the local volunteer coordinator Milton. We went there quite early and to our big ... read more

Hello! First of all, SO sorry for the lack of pictures! Everyone knows that reading is no fun without pictures! And I would put up the pictures now, but I don´t have the hooker upper! So, yall are just going to have to wait a little longer. Well today is Saturday, which means crazy market! I woke up at about 7 today and got all ready, etc, but we didn´t leave until 9:30 because we have a bunch of slow pokes. Let me just tell you...this market is AMAZING. I bought so many pairs of great earrings and some necklaces and perfect presents... And the day isn´t even half over! The main street, Sucre, is so entirely filled with people and their stands that cars can´t even attempt to get through, because it is hard enough ... read more

She is a Harry S Truman scholar, which I guess is a big deal, but right now she has to write a 1000 plus words essay that is due tomorrow, so i dont know how happy she is about it haha. YAY!! It is FRIDAY!! I am probably such a horrible teacher, but i am soo looking forward to this weekend when i can really see Otavalo and maybe take a trip or two! Okay, so last night...can you say salsa lesson?? Haha..Really what we do is dance in front of a mirror for nearly 2 hours until you are exhausted and feel really lame while doing it because the gym is right behind you and creepy guys lifting weights watch you pretending like you know what you are doing. It is great. I took a picture with Clever so yall can see him! But i am going to load it later becaue the connection is horrible. This morning i woke up at 8:30 which is really late and i loooved it! Hey everyone, it's Wednesday morning but I am going to write about yesterday because I didn't have access to the internet for very long last night, as well as the capability to hook up the camera to the computer, which i think i figured out! Okay, so Monday night we got our luggage!!! YAY! It was really late at night, and Christopher and Katie had to go out to the airport (which takes about 2 ish hours) and once they got there, they had to wait, etc. but finally at about 12:30 they arrived!! It was so exciting. So, I no longer have to wear the same clothes..I have a choice! Along with getting the luggage, they also got our boxes that had all of the materials for the kids. We have, it seems like, thousands and ... read more

Hola! Today is Monday the 10th and the first day of my teaching in Otavalo. On my team are Daylin (college student from Hawaii now living in New York) and Allison (new to the group, from Kentucky and has already been in Ecuador for two weeks). Wow. What a first day. Our teaching times are 2 to 5 in the afternoon. So we got there around 1.30 and there were already a few chicas waiting for us there. They are all so cute! By the end of the day we had over 20 kids in our class. It was a little intimidating, yet really informative and a lot of fun. Because we STILL don’t have our luggage (tonight we will get it, we pray) we still don’t have our teaching materials for the kids, which was ... read more

I was paired with Christopher to teach at Chuchuqui, the furthest village from Otavalo. This meant that most or even all our kids would be indigenous-something I was hoping for. Our first day of classes was nerve raking since I had no teaching experience, especially with kids in intermediate. We drove up a dirty road to the school where the principal-a middle-aged indigenous woman welcomed us. The kids were all sitting on the curb and we took attendance while we waited for the classroom to be unlocked. When the children were asked their name, a faint whisper came out of their mouths, and soon I realized the idea of me writing down their names was not a good one. Confidence would definitely be an issue to work on. ... read more

Horrible!!! We did watch the game here in Otavalo and the locals even started filming us becauase we were so into the game. How could the Italians win!!??!!?? The Frenchies dominated the whole game!!! I am so sorry for the loss. But everybody seems to think that the Italians don't play fair. Hehe. Ok, for yesterday evening... I don't know what I expected, but I advice everybody not to go to a cockfight, even if it is something that does not exist where you live. It was the most horrible thing I have ever seen in real life and I will never be able to see a cock again without thinking of the mad fights yesterday. We stayed for ten minutes I think and then felt sick... Today we have been busy doing the last shopping ... read more
