Otavalo, Ecuador This is going to be another short one, but I thought I´d try to get this done before I forgot all we have done so far! Unfortunately this is going to have to be my personal journal, too, because I don´t have time to write one out for myself! Today we left the hotel in Quito and headed to Otavalo to our new hotel for today and tomorrow. It is beautiful ;) Then, we headed into the market and shopped, ate a delicious lunch at a family owned restaurant and even met the mayor of Otavalo. After our busy day we headed into the more rural areas to meet with local artisans and to learn about their trade. They performed music for us, made instruments, taught us how they weave scarves and ponchos, ... read more

We had much more luck on Sunday. We drove up to the Laguna de Cuicocha in the back of a pick up - sorry mum! We then walked around the crater lake. The walk took about 4 hours. The views were absolutely amazing. On one side you had the view over the countryside on the other the crater lake. In the distance there were many mountains including volcano Cayambe. I took lots of photos of the lake but they don´t even begin to describe how spectacular it was. After our walk we went to the local town of Cotacachi. This is the town all the locals in Otavalo go for Sunday lunch. Their traditional dish is something called coloured meat. Of course we had to try it no matter how untasty it sounds! I´m really glad ... read more

Otavalo is a town about 2.5 hours from Quito. It is where they have a huge market. We all visited it this weekend. We got up mega early in the morning to go to the animal markets. These start at about 5am and finish and 8am. We went to the small animal market at 6.30am where they sell cats, chickens, guinea pigs and dogs. We then went to the large animal market where they sell cows, lamas and pigs. It was quite different to Bakewell animal market! After this and finally having some breakfast we went to the craft and veg market. This is the biggest market in Ecuador so I managed to get a few pressies. In the afternoon we tried to go to the waterfall near Otavalo but got terribly lost. The lady in ... read more

Escale à Miami Party in the city where the HEAT is on !

Have been in Equador a couple of weeks now and been on a bit of a whistlestop tour! First stop was Vilcabamba a beautiful mountain village where we did a day of horse riding up the hills. The ride was great but a little scary for me as despite having not ridden for about 6 years I apparently had the most experience in our group and so ended up riding an enourmous horse called Inca who was a bit of a handful to say the least! Two weeks later my blisters are just about disappearing! From Vilcabamba we went to the fishing village of Puerto Lopez and went out whale spotting. Its high season for whale watching there because its mating season for humpbacks.. cue lots of jokes about humping! We managed to see 4 whales ... read more

On était 10 ... read more

Yesterday we drove for an hour into the mountains, headed for the Mojanda Lakes, 3700 metres above sea level (1,000m higher than Otavalo). It´s the first time we´ve ever been out for a walk with a policeman, a chauffeur and an outdoor specialist. The greatest danger we faced was stepping in caca de vaca (cowpats or wolf droppings). We thought the policeman plus walkie-talkie might have been supplied in case one of us collapsed in a heap. However, you´ll be glad to hear that we didn´t let New Zealand down; we all held our own very well. We had a lovely tramp part-way around one of the lakes, and especially enjoyed the trip up and down, over a cobbled and rough roads, past beautiful haciendas, with frequent swerves for potholes and roadworks. We were especially on ... read more

Hola amigos We´re all very happy because we now know which way the water goes down the plughole in the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. Yesterday we visited la Mitad del Mundo, the equator just north of Quito. We all stood with one foot in each hemisphere and did the touristy experiments, but it was all very interesting (and very hot). On the way we picked up the new volunteers who will be working in the local communities with a company called Global Vision International, teaching the children who otherwise cannot get to school. It´s a wonderful thing they´re all doing, and it was good for us to see that their anxieties were the same as ours were two weeks ago. A short postscript to Saturday´s birthday party report - the one who won the big prize ... read more

So let's see. where did i leave off. can't make the question mark work on this keyboard, so you'll have to use your imagination. i made one final trip to Tena to get some clean clothes. feels like a miracle after having soggy wet clothes that never dry in the jungle. Said my goodbyes to my volunteer station and caught a bus to Baeza, to revisit my girl Mia and my favorite place in Ecuador, the Magic Roundabout hostal. Kendall, a fellow volunteer came with me for some R and R, and we caught the bus with 2 other volunteers who were going onward. so it was nice to leave with some company. Made it to the Magic Roundabout and welcomed the cooler air and the gorgeous view. had a great meal, took a great waterfall ... read more

Yesterday we were driven through beautiful Andean mountains to the middle of nowhere, to find an idyllic hot springs area in a steep-sided valley, beautifully maintained. After paying, you walk down a flower-lined pathway to a number of hot pools of different temperatures, the hottest at the top. We sat soaking in relaxing waters with stunning views down through the valley. There was hardly anyone else there. On the way back we had to really pinch ourselves to make sure we really were here, bumping along through narrow cobbled roads high in the Andes, children playing without any toys or modern equipment. Signs for the local cockfight. Dusty villages, with lovely plazas in the middle of them, and of course the obligatory church. Huge prickly cacti and aloes clinging to the sides of the dry mountains. ... read more
