Dear all, today is Friday, 19.08. I just came down from the mountains in the pick up truck and realised that my first week of teaching is over! After a few very cold days, we had lots of sun today and the journey through the mountains to and from school was simply beautiful. This journey will probably be the most scenic way to work I will ever have in my life! Looking back, this week has been quite challenging at times but I have learned a lot. I am a little disappointed that we have not had more than 1o kids per day, but hopefully Nicola and I will be able to build up the number of children attending school over the next few weeks. In my opinion, the few kids we had this week have ... read more

Dear all, today was my second day teaching in Urqusiquie. Behind this beautiful names lies a number of rather basic tiny classrooms at 3000 metres in the Andes with no running water. The toilets that are so dirty that even the children prefer to go into the fields...(as do I!) A pick up truck takes me and the other three teachers up into the mountains around 7.30 am. It is so cold in the mornings on the back of the truck that I am going to buy a woolly hat on my way back from the Internet Cafe. I might even consider teaching with gloves at least during the morning. The sun shines all day but with no radiators in school it is always chilly. The children, however, don't seem to mind at all. They turn ... read more

Hola chicas y chicos, all is well here in Ecuador. 6 lessons of Spanish a day are definitely doing my head in and although Senor Fernando is ever so nice, he does go on about irregular verbs in the imperfect tense - not much use for me who still struggles to string together a sentence (ie main clause, SVO structure!). I find the conversations with the locals are a lot more useful and they don't correct me all the time either!! (I have started reviewing my own teaching approach, no doubt!!) The family is really nice and I am able to say a lot more to them. We eat together at lunchtime in their restaurant and they are very helpful with everything. I think I have spotted a food pattern: la sopa, rice, potatoes, lentils, ... read more

Hola! Que tal? I can¨t believe that I am finally in Ecuador! I only left the UK on Saturday but already I feel that I have seen so much. The flight was ok and I was met by the project manager at the airport in Quito - thank God! We stayed in a hotel and stopped at the Mitad del Mundo on our way to Otavalo the next day. Obviously, I had the very touristy photograph taken when standing with one leg on each hemisphere. Mi familia I arrived in Otavalo yesterday and was very pleased to find that my host family is very nice and tries to understand my Spanish to the best of their ability. There is Huana, my host mother and her husband (?) whose name I still cannot remember! They run a ... read more

- FOOD: Bargainous almuerzo, good pizza by an open fire, my first gin and tonic (and my last having tasted it). - AREA: A very bad journey to Otavalo which is home to the 'best' market in South America. Ok but a bit tacky (or have I just been to too many markets now?) - PEOPLE: Lovely local lady on the bus to chat to. Back in Quito, a very drunk Dave and a very slimy Ecuadorian man. Luckily, Simon the saviour appeared at the right time. - WEATHER: Enough wind and rain for the trees to fall down, blocking the road to Otavalo. Tues 5th: Had yet another lie in and then had the most bargain lunch of a starter of avocado with palm hearts, main of chicken and rice and desert of mousse, with ... read more

We left Quito early yesterday morning and set off for Mindo which is in the Cloud Forest. We stopped on the way to visit an Orchid reserve and had a walk through the sub tropical rainforest where we saw some lizards and birds. We then made our way to Mindo Gardens which is the lodge where we stayed right next the Mindo river, which was about 6 kilometers from the nearest village along a dirt track. We had lunch in the restaurant whilst watching a selection of Hummingbirds feeding just outside the window. In the afternoon we went to a Butterfly breeding centre and saw Butterflies at all stages of development. Later on we visited another cafe where we saw some different species of Hummingbirds and a Parrot. Today we were woken at 5.30 am to ... read more

So, the second attempt at writing this. Friday afternoon, after lunch and a nap Molly and I decided to take a walk. We nap after every meal, and unsuccessfully attempt to walk after each nap. We decided to explore parts of the city that had never been explored before...a street parallel to Colon. We bought a few CDs, me with Mollys advice and walked about a mile to find an open bank to change our tens and twentys into fives, because no one here has change for those large bills. After we got home and ate, we took yet another nap that was only supposed to last an house, but lasted two.We were woken up by the maid, Sandy, at 8:00. We then got ready to go out and went to the airport to pick up ... read more

Sadly, tomorrow is my last day in Otovalo after just five short weeks. I´ve really enjoyed my time here, met some great people, my family could not have been nicer (yes, even the alsatian, bless him!) and the kids at the school are just incredible. Yesterday was my last day at the school, was quite emotional sying ‘Adiós’ insteas of the usual ‘Hasta mañana’ as I left. Many of the kids had made me cards and little letters saying don´t go, we love you, please come back, etc, which was so touching. Had a little ‘moment’ saying good-bye to a couple of my favourites, so sad. Way too many stories to go into, but a few school highlights from the past month... * Heads, shoulders, knees and toes in the playground (see pic) * Buying pencil ... read more

End of week three - already?! I´ve now successfully booked my Galapagos trip for eight days from the 10th April. That gives me another week here in Otovalo, so I´ll be able to spend an extra few days up at the community, which I´m grateful for, because what with Spanish lessons, Easter, and various other unforeseen situations, the four weeks that I allocated to the project has rapidly shrunk to just a few days of actually teaching my own English lessons, which is a little disappointing after studying so hard for the TEFL before coming out here. Hey ho, all good experience though, and a lot of fun too! So what’s Otovalo like? Well, right now, just sat here in the internet café I’m at twice the height of Ben Nevis (highest mountain in UK), i.e ... read more
