After returning from the Galapagos a few of us decided to go to visit Mitad del Mundo..... the middle of the Earth! A group of 6 of us booked a car complete with friendly driver to take us on the 1 hour trip north of Quito to the equator line. It was actually discovered a few years ago using GPS that the original 'middle of the earth´ is actually 200 meters out! We visited the 'real´ middle of the earth where for a small entry fee, you get a local English-speaking guide who gives you lots of interesting information about local Inca tribes plus he showed us some cool things like shrunken heads and the skin from a 10 meter long anaconda!!! After showing us around the facility we finally got to the equator line and ... read more

Today we left Quito and headed north towards the Equator visiting the excellent "In Situ" Inti-Nan solar museum. We learnt some of the history of the indigenous people as well as having the opportunity to conduct lots of cool experiments! We watched the Kondi Contrifugat forces in action by pouring water down a sink on the equator line, in the northern hemisphere and then the southern hemisphere. We also attempted to balance an egg on the head of a nail and walk in a straight line along the equator with our eyes closed. You could feel yourself being pulled either side. It was really cool. Afterwards we headed to the Mitad del Mundo which marks the original spot of the equator line before we had GPS. On the way to our next stop of Otovalo we ... read more

Day 3 We spent the entire morning doing pretty much nothing as we had to wait for our room transfer (to a much smaller room). At least we got a bed and a blanket! Finding a travel adapter was a bit of mission, we started off at KIWI the South American version of Wallmart.....where you can find anything! This was all in the search to power Pooja's Mp3 player! In the end we gave up and got on the Trolebus to La Y central where we changed buses to Cotocollao, where we changed buses again to get to Mitad Del Mundo. Although we aren't quite sure we felt like we were taken around the long way and also hustled for the price! Funnily enough we got the same bus driver on the way back! Always doubt ... read more

We got into a rhythm in the big city. Lying on the equator, we had a consistent 12 hours of relatively safe sunshine to exploit. Of course, just wandering the Quiteño streets would always yield some surprise or another (like the man breathing fire at the intersection, or the anti-Bush graffiti we saw sprinkled about town), but we also wanted to get out and see as much as we possibly could of the surrounding areas. We started each day with a hearty breakfast of fresh and exotic Ecuatorian fruits (with names like taxo, durazno, babaco, granadilla, naranjilla, and tomate de arbol) and scrambled eggs. Fueled by Marta's cooking, off we´d trot to Spanish class. After four hours of language practice, we´d climb aboard a bus and set out to explore the afueras. Before night fell, we ... read more

Sorry, photos will be coming soon!!! Ecuador and the rain is chasing us. Immigration was ok, in fact better than usual, being super quick, even though we'd been forwarned not to look anyone in the eye, stop or talk to anyone. Always welcoming to a new country. Martin escaped a random checking of his money, by a uniformed officer, though quite what he was checking was not really apparent, but none was taken. The journey was delayed due to the incessant rain, as roads turned to rivers and people waded up to their knees. We arrived in Guayaquil at 8.30pm, a good 10hrs from the beginning. Staying only a night, just to make a connection the next day to Cuenca. This again had been delayed due to the bad weather, and when the proposed time of ... read more

This blog actually covers two days, Saturday and today, Sunday. I actually wrote lots in my journal, but will try to condense it here for you. That said, email me if you're interested in the longer version of my journeys... Saturday's big event was to go to the Middle of the World, or Mitad del Mundo. It is here you can stand on the literal Equator. You can do the dorky things like have your picture taken with each foot in a different hemisphere. Yes, that picture is included in this blog with me in both hemispheres, just like I have the pictures of me in four US states at the same time (Four Corners, USA). The journey to Mitad isn't all that bad; it's about 20 km (I think) outside of the city proper. I ... read more

So after some pretty horrific turbulance on both flights, Will and I arrived safely to the second highest airport in the world, Quito, standing at 2850m (about 9000ft). Quito is a big city of 1.2m people but no hustle and bustle. No-one seems to be in the least bit interested in us, and what a great feeling that is! We are not hassled to buy anything, no foot polishers chase us down the street and in fact no-one seems to look at us atall! So far all the food has been amazing. Fruit, fruit juice, coffee and croissants for breakfast and chicken soup with bits of bone marrow floating in it for lunch. It doesn´t sound appetizing but is probably the equivalent to one of our oxo cubes! So much nicer! On Wednesday we got a ... read more

Current Location: Quito, Ecuador Yesterday, I and several friends that I met here in Quito, made the hour trip to La Mitad del Mundo, the middle of the world. It´s been said that everyone who comes to Ecuador makes the trip to the equator, and I believe it. I haven´t seen so many gringos in one place since stepping onto the plance in Houston. It is a complete tourist trap, an entire town devoted completely to tourism. Outrageous prices galore! And on top of that, it isn´t even located on the real equator. Lonely Planet calls it one of Ecuadors biggest secrets. Several years ago when the French designated the site to be where the equator cuts through Ecuador, they some how made a mistake and the entire site ended up being North of the equator ... read more
