Well I´ve been away for 2 weeks now and I´m finally getting into it. Have had a hard week the past week, realisation of were I am, frustration about the isolation, lack of electricity and home comforts and the expoential level of mud and bugs but it´s amazing what a couple of days can do to change your thoughts, especially since the arrival of Cesar, the staions owner and all round Galapogean wonder. The guy emits postiviity in bucket loads so the next 4 weeks are shaping up to be fun filled & action packed, I just know I´m going to learn a lot from this guy. I´ve had the freak out which I´ve heard happens to a lot of voulnteers but I´ve embraced now as the weeks are flying bye and the only way is ... read more

So I am at the end of my first working week here. It got better after the first day,,, dont get me wrong, it is still incredibly boring, but there have been a steady trickle of patients, so while i still have yet to do anything useful at least its something to look at! The doctors are friendly but as bored as me,, its the unlucky rotation to get from guayaquil mainland. But i actually really dont mind, strolling down the hill to sit in a hospital for three or four hours trying to teach people a little english actually isnt too bad, it because i know its only for a little longer and its reasonably sociable and itss good to havve some focus to the day i suppose! so thats work..the hospital is tiny but ... read more

So Im here!! On the last part of my journey... galapagos. Getting here was a pain...lots of waitingg around at quito airport when the plane was delayed. I met a nice dutch girl who speaks english so perfectly I thought she was american! Anyway she was less than pleased when she got on the plane and her seat which was 1 A didnt exist because numbering started at 1 D...very strange..but she did get a seat. It was nice to fly over quito and appreciate its aamazing location and how hilly the actual city is..in fact even now im getting a little twinge of nostalgia for it! We had a stop over at guayaquil 35 mins later so it seemed hardly worth taking off...by this time i was feeling a bit apprehensive, I was all settled ... read more

Hola once more, I´ve made it to the Galapagos and finally dipped a toe in the Pacific Ocean. My bag arrived on Wed morning at twenty passed 7am, then I hot footed it to the national airport to check in for my Galapagos flight for seven thirty so I had it in my possession for a total of ten minutes. The reunion at the airport was quite an emotional one to say the least! Much love to maria my home stay Mum who has been wonderful for Monday and Tuesday, literally nothing was too much bother and I have been invited back once I arrive back in Qutio in 6 weeks for good food and company. Flight to Galapagos was 3 hours, much longer than expected and I was very surprised at how many people were ... read more

Much has happened since our last blog entry. May 14...our driver to take us to the airport was supposed to arrive at 7:40 am. Instead we get a call at 6:40am saying he´d be there at 7am because our flight was moved up. Stu hadn´t packed so he tossed everything into the suitcase, we squeezed in breakfast and away we went. Our drivers walks us into the terminal, hands us our boarding passes, we go through security and board the plane without ever having to show ID. "Are you Mr Stu?" is apparently all the ID you need. We arrive in the Galapagos on Santa Cruz island and are taken to a turtle farm where we see huge land turtles that can grow to be up to 700 lbs. After we go to port and visit ... read more

On Sunday morning we left our boat for the last time. On San Cristóbal Island we went to the Galapagos Islands Interpretation Center, which had a lot of information about the islands, their history, their animals, resources, and people. Then we went to the airport and flew back to Quito. The end of our Galapagos tour! Galapagos Highlights: The best days and islands of the Galapagos... Everything was amazing and I'm definitely glad I did the longer tour, because although we saw a lot of the animals more than one day, every island had something special that we didn't see anywhere else or that we saw more of at that specific island. So you can't really go wrong when choosing a tour route as it is going to be spectacular regardless! I would definitely recommend a ... read more

... read more

Alright, so I'm already back from the Galapagos and leaving for AK tomorrow, but I'm going to do this day by day... And by the way the Galapagos was freaking amazing! We saw so many animals and swam with most of them! We also saw a bunch that are unusual to see. Our guide kept telling us how rarely he sees them and how lucky we were. So it was a spectacular trip!!! The 9th I arrived back in Quito and met my group for the Galapagos! 2 sisters in their 20's, 2 guys in their 30's, a couple couples in their 30s, a family of 4 with a 12 year old boy (Zach) and a 15 year old girl (Taylor) (parents: Buffy and Blaine), and another single traveler, Julia, 22. Saturday afternoon in Quito I ... read more

Dabei konnte man ... read more

Again- I need to apologize for not writing in weeks! When the end of my trip started to near, I was much more reluctant to go use the internet for hours at a time... which these blogs do take to write! On November 9th a new volunteer arrived... her name is Marily. She is from South Africa but now lives in Denver. She has four children and lived in Chile for 7 years. She is really nice and it was fun to have another volunteer in the house... although it was quite busy for a last few weeks! She worked at the hospital in the mornings (with babies) and taught English at one of the high schools in the afternoons three days a week. On the afternoon she came, we all went up to my host ... read more
