Islas De Galapagos, Isla San Cristobàl, Puerto Baquerizo Moreno, 14-10-1990. A small eatery on Puerto Baquerizo Moreno's quay with the fitting name Comedor Comida Rica - tasty food in the local lingo - is a perfect place for a meal and getting to know our new passengers - a spanish couple in their early forties - while we wait for the crew to load supplies. It takes but a few hundert human steps to get away from the village though, where black eroded lava forms strange and mysterious shapes in an otherwise barren landscape where small cactus roots have found cracks and crevices, pools with herminite crabs, small inlets and rocky caves harbouring a varied marine sustained wildlife, all ot it so unique to these isolated patches of volcanic rock. I walk alone now and without ... read more

Charles Darwin is the famous philosopher who is most commonly known for discovering the pristine and enchanting beauty of the Galapagos Islands. The first island that Charles Darwin discovered was San Cristobal (the one I am currently living on). He originally spent only 2 weeks on the Galapagos Islands, and spent the next 25 years working on his book called “The Origin of Species”. This book is said to be the foundation of evolutionary biology, and introduced the theory that populations evolve over the course of generations through a process called "natural selection". It presented a body of evidence that the diversity of life arose through a branching pattern of evolution and common descent. hmm. thought we´d put a blip up. we packed our bags up after a month and some in the galapagos and are headed back to quito on monday. last update i think emily mentioned we found a cheap boat to hop on to tour the islands. we had intended to just spend a long weekend on santa cruz (another island with a larger town and bigger harbor) to look for ways to get around the islands, but a few hours after we got off the ferry, we happened apon a tour that was leaving that afternoon. they had two places left, and we are two people, and we got the trip at pretty much 50%. we took our small weekend day packs and hopped on ´rumba´. it was a proud little ship. it held ten guests ... read more

Islas De Galapagoa, Isla San Crirstòbal, Puerto Baquerizo Moreno, 13-10-1990. Huge volcanic sub-marine eruptions take place pushing boiling hot lava out into the realm of unsuspected marine life, fish getting barbequed on the spot, crabs and anemones burried under the onslaught of the lava gliding across the sea bed leaving behind death and destruction, teutonic plates deep inside the earth's crust shift adding more mayhem and anhihilation to the ever continueing cycle of sea life... While enormous quantities of rain torment the sea'a surface, bright flahes of lighning splitting the dark night's sky, high and powerfull waves rolling away from the emerging lava, the first small cones are visible of what will eventually be the volcanoes that are the nowaday barren and rocky island of Las Islas De Galapagos, stretched over an inmense fast fifty thousand ... read more

So far my placement at the hospital has been going well. I have been shadowing doctors and nurses on a daily basis and helping out whenever I can. Some of my daily duties include stamping receipt papers, filing and retrieving patient files, and distributing perscriptions. I have done work in the clinic, taking patients´weight, height, temperature, and pulse. I also assist once a week with baby vaccinations. My Spanish is still not great, so my ability to help out is somewhat limited. No one at the hospital speaks English, and assigning me tasks is sometimes a task in itself! But I have come to realize that you don´t always need to talk to learn, just being in this atmosphere has taught me alot. ... read more

Landing on the Galapagos Islands for the first time is something that will stick in my memory forever. Maybe it was the tikihut airport, or maybe it was the sea lions lounging on a nearby beach, but something made this place very special. I was greeted by Nelly and her 4 energetic children, Roberto (16), Analia (14), Ivan (11), and Andre (8). It was evident that this town was very small, and it was reminding me of home very much! The Saltos family owns a small hostel, aswell as a fruit/vegetable/chicken farm. My days are spent in town at the hostel, and evenings at the farm. Whether it be manhunt, soccer, or dancing, the kids keep my on my toes 24/7. They always remind me how much Spanish I have yet to learn, and it is ... read more

We just finished our second week of work at the reserve...the time is flying by! This week included a lot of machete work, clearing some land for the organic garden. Other than that, we did some seed planting, watering, and a trip to the Interpretation Center where we read all about the history of the Galápagos. During the week we had the chance to go on a authentic Galapaganian pig hunt! We ventured into the dense island woods at night with a flashlight or two, a sling shot, a bucket of rocks, a few guys speaking spanish, a quite german girl, a friendly little black dog (the supposed pig hunter) and a machete. Three hours later, after an extended battle with pricker bushes, we walked out of the woods with a live chicken and an orange. ... read more

Hello from the Galápagos! A beautiful place! The weather has been amazing! We heard it cleared up right when we got here...it was rainy and moist everyday until we arrived. Now it´s been sunny and warm! The reserve is located about 45 minutes away from the main town, Puerto Baquerizo Moreno, on San Cristobal Island. Everyone at the reserve has been very friendly, especially the volunteer coordinator (Cesar) who reminds us of one of our permaculture teachers Claude William Genest. We also met up with Phil, the Scottish man who was at La Hesperia who came here a week ago. (Phil is a 40ish year old guy from Scotland. He works to live and has traveled all over the world. His main occupation at home, besides what ever makes money, is a career in his local ... read more

Im back in the hospital today,..trying to find the right moment to get them to sign me off..without putting the date... doing mtas...but anyway, the weekend was for more interesting.. Friday night I went to a school event with some of the volunteers at the navy school. They thought it was going to be a fashion show, After waiting for an hour and a half from the published start hour, the show finally started. The volunteer had undesrtood it was a school election but actually it was a beauty pageant for electing a king and queen of the sea...but really the guy was just there to have the girl on their arm. the surreal evening started with the three competing girls who were 15 16 and 17 doing a provocative belly dance in little crop tops ... read more
