On day one we are wisked away after dinner for snorkeling. We have not been in the water more than twenty minutes when we encounter a Marine turtle about one and a half feet across and two feet wide. It floats gracefully towards us eyeing with idle curiosity the big gangely, cumbersom creatures in front of it. Sun shines turquoise water onto it´s back. It looks wisely into my eyes, turns and glides away unimpressed. Sea lions soak up the sun on the shore. I swim along hoping to encounter one in the water. I do. A large grey bull male comes up behind me barking something that I roughly translate as ´this is my bit of water so piss off´I attempt to do so as swiftly as I can. He glides effortlessly past me ignoring ... read more

On the flight from Lima to Quito we were stuck at the back of the plane with no window which was very disorientating especially during the landing. We were picked up at the airport and driven to Hotel Santa Barbra by a taxi drive who was all smiles. We walked around the block in the rain looking for an ATM and somewhere to eat. We found both and ate at the Swiss Hotel Cafe. Packed our hand luggage for eight days in the Galapagos and slept. The taxi picked us up at seven after breakfast. Hello! Haven't written in ages... but there is so much to say! I apologize in advance that you have to read a ton. Charlotte got here about two weeks ago which is wonderful. It is nice to have someone to speak to in English and we immediately got along. She is from the UK... she is 22 and just finished studying to become a teacher. We live in adjacent rooms and work at the same school. She works at Ingala in the morning from 7:30 to 9:30 and the school from 10 to 12. She is just learning Spanish so I do a fair bit of translating, but that only helps my spanish more since I am forced to actually understand things! Halloween was fun, although different since we didn't have trick or treating! It was ... read more

People often ask me what the most awesome trip I've every done was. I used to answer "Galapagos!" But then I went on awesomer, and awesomer trips and I rarely talk about this trip anymore. It just might have been the best ever, though. It was the first big trip I did that I had alone time in another country and I needed to navigate hostels, new places, new people, but a familiar language. Another reason I stopped talking about the Galapagos is because I don't recommend that anyone go there without at least being informed. If you don't know, the Galapagos are a series of 13 islands located 1000km off the coast of mainland Ecuador. Of the 13 islands, 5 are inhabited by humans (I visited all 5). Because the islands are so far from ... read more
