As I whizzed through an efficient border crossing and was greeted by smiley people at every stop on the bus to Quito, selling everything from hamburgers to cancer-curing pills, I had a feeling I was going to like Ecuador. Unfortuntaley, this first impression was quickly ruined on my first attempt at exploring Quito´s old town the following day. Out of nowhere, a bucket of poo (yes, actual poo, as in human faceas - maybe mixed with vomit and water for a runny effect) was thrown over me and my friend. Utterly shocked and completely baffled, we stood looking bewildered, quickly pulling out tissues from my bag to try and clean up the siutuation. In an instant, a kind Ecaudorian man with some tissue came to our rescue and as he pointed at a place we could ... read more

Friday 7th October I cant help but wonder how you all are as I lay here in my hammock, listening to the birds and feeling the faint cool breeze sweep across our verandah, deep here in the Amazon jungle. Shane on the other hand is on the throne doing a sudoku puzzle. LOL Its been a bit of a mixed bag. When we arrived in Lago Agrio on Tuesday morning, we were hit with a wall of heat. I said "oh my god its so hot and humid!", to which Shane replied "Just remember whose idea it was to do this." And he continues to remind me to this day. We drove for about 2 hrs from the airport at extremely high speed around extremely tight corners, and just as I thought we couldnt take any ... read more

When I went to the jungle for a week, I hit right in the middle of the “love” season. It was the wet season and therefor reproduction time. I guess that is why I did not see too many animals, as public displays are prohibited by law and even the animals respect that ;) I stayed in a simple lodge by a river. Rivers here are the roads of the jungle. My hut was open to all sides of the forest and at night it was pitchblach and the sounds of the Amazon were overwhelming! You just lie under your mosquito net and listen to the sounds and try to figure out if they were love calls or cries of life and death…but in the end, even I had a dream of being pregnant, it really ... read more

If you swim with Aligators, something will happen to you. Sounds obvious I know but when the Napo Wildlife Lodge in the Amazon said 'you can swim in the lake' they didn't say it was infested with Aligators. Two nights later we found lots of Aligators, some the size of a large torpedo, on the lake close to our huts. Still the nice man in the green shirt reassured me with 'they've not attacked anyone yet'! My problem ended up not being the Aligators, but more the microscopic bugs I consumed while flailing around in the murky waters. Overnight vomiting and a day or more on my back ensued but I had already seen lots of birds, monkeys, insects, spiders, frogs and even a pig to justify the trip. But the most amazing thing of all ... read more

Buenos dias! Alicja here. We have spent the past week in the Ecuadorean Amazon Rainforest, which was the most thrilling part of our trip so far! On the Monday, we took a flight from Quito to Coca, and then took a 3 hour boat to the jungle, and another 1 hour canoe to our hotel, which was a traditional lodge made of bamboo. After we had settled in, we went for a walk in the jungle with Lindsay and Leah (also in our group), our tour guide, Jorge, and our native guide (Pajarito, it means little bird) who could spot a camouflaged frog in the dark ten meters away! Later in the evening after dinner we went on a canoe on the river to spot Caymen. We didn't manage to spot any that night but ... read more

August 6th We were introduced this morning to Gus (short for Agustus) who is our truck and will be our home for the next 3 weeks. As a great introduction we were stuck on there for 6 hours as we drove to an incredible eco lodge, Shangrila, just outside of Tena where we will be for the next 3 nights. It is an amazing colection of tree house type structures situated on a cliff above a huge river and overlooking miles of forest. After lunch we headed out for a ¨walk¨through the jungle which actually turned out to be a walk/trek/canyoning adventure. I had tons of fun and it was a great introduction to the Amazon. We began just walking through the jungle, learning about different types of plants, before starting to walk through a stream. ... read more

According to the website of the Jatun Sacha Foundation their Amazonian reserve is situated at: The southern bank of the Upper Napo River, at an altitude of 450 meters above sea level, at 1º 04' S, 77º 36' W, in the Napo Province of Ecuador. This is the edge of Amazonia and was our chance to complete some volunteer work in an area that was always an ambition to visit. Ants, termites, butterflies, bugs and birds are abundant visitors and easy to see each day during the volunteer activities. Humidity and rain were constant companions during our month long stay in this ecological hotspot. During your time as a volunteer, you will assist with reforestation and learn about the forest. You might be able to teach English and will enhance your Spanish. You will almost definitely ... read more

In the last few days I was able to finish painting and posting the chichico (tamarin) monkey crossing signs to post near the reserve with the help of a fellow volunteer. The manager of the station seemed very happy about this. He had a huge grin on his face when I walked by with the 10ft post with the sign nailed to it over my shoulder to put it in the ground on the side of the road. A car drove by later and he asked me if I heard that, 'what?'...'they slowed down!' he said. I really wasn’t sure if anyone would pay attention to the signs, but I was pleased to see that most people did take notice! I also climbed the observation tower which is about 100ft tall. I had a harness..but you ... read more

I´ve now completed my four weeks in the Amazon Rainforest. It is a tragic story here in one of the most biodiverse places in the world. Continuing deforestation and segmentation of the rainforest in these areas make a bleak future for the rainforest. There has been an airport built near the Jatun Sacha Amazon station. This is between this reserve and another one. Air and noise pollution, road expansion and increase in tourism will deteriorate this unique environment. Simulation studies have shown that this will decrease the population of sensitive bird, vegetation and other species. Unfortunately, the support of the local community was bought out by developers. The money was not wisely invested as education is lacking in these areas. Many of the property owners bought out spent the money on fancy vehicles or celebrated until ... read more

We arrived at the station after a 5hour bus ride and a taxi ride in the bed of a truck with the luggage. We met some of the volunteers as they came back from their day in town and at work. We made plans with the rest of the group for the weekend to see some areas around the station. On Saturday we had a surprise visit from some local students around 14 and 15 years of age. The teacher requested that some of us volunteer to practice English with the students. They were very enthusiastic once they broke through their shyness. It was amazing to see their eagerness to learn and they were very glad to have us there to help them. Then they tested us in our Spanish...ahh! Afterward we joined them at the ... read more
