Paa ... read more

This isn't really a proper blog entry just a excuse to add a couple more pictures, I suppose that was all the sloth entry was about aswell!! The weather has been pretty good, the last time I checked it was 33 0c and its been hotter. Anyway, I take the heat as an opportunity to do some clothes washing, yes Mother you did read it correctly! I took a photo of my socks to prove it and because I thought they looked quite pretty in the sun! And no mother, I haven't been wearing matching socks, shame on me!! My second is of a dragonfly. The family i'm staying with have a small pond and there were these two beautiful pink dragonflies and I gave myself a task to take a photo of one of them. ... read more

Today, My class went on a short walk to the river just to look around and to collect sand for our craft which we did a bit later. It was fun to get out of the school and the kids really enjoyed it. They have been doing there numbers and thoughourly enjoyed running around pointing our all the numbers they found on the way to the river. I took this outing as an opportunity to take my camera in and the kids loved posing and then looking at the picture. I had a pretty cool weekend. On Saturday I got up early and joined a group of about 12 and went white water rafting. It was amazing and I only fell out once but was pushed many times. It was a catgory 4 river so ... read more

Well OK maybe not the deepest darkest Amazon, we were only an hour away from a major city (Tena) and there were local houses across the river, but the road in was pretty rough, and we get to pretend right.... SUNDAY 2 MARCH 08 Today we travel to our jungle lodge (lianna lodge) near Tena. Most of the day is spent on the road in the bus, but we did have a brief stop at some hot springs a couple of hours north of Quito. Tiare was feeling too sick to swim and slept on the bus and Nick still has his phobia about spas.... it was really just like a bunch of heated pools though there was a pretty creek running through the middle of the complex. The rest of the day was pretty much ... read more

Hola Today I had a day off of school, hence the title. It was all to do with honouring the Ecuadorian flag or something. It was a big event at the secondary school I went to but I haven´t seen much fuss anywhere else about it. I have attached some pictures. Basically The Kids marched in and a lot of spanish was said, they sang the national anthem and then they took it in turns to kiss the flag. It was also Jessica, Bilma´s oldest daughter´s birthday today, she is 17. I got her some braclets and they also had a rather big cake which was very nice. On one of my many strolls round the local area, I fell across a river really close to where I am staying. I was very inspired by this ... read more

I got some good news last night over dinner. Bilma and I were having our usual ´chat´both learning from each other when I managed to translate that another volunteer is due here in a couple of weeks, so i´m going to be looking forward to that. My progress at the school has been good. Most of the children know 1,2,3,4,5 in english and they love Head, Shouldes, Knees and Toes and Incy Wincy Spider is also much appriciated! I think my expertises of cutting and sticking are also coming in handy!!! There has been a lot of rain here and its good in the morning as it drowns out the cockrel waking me up at 5:00 in the morning everyday, you could almost set your watch to it! Although there is a lot of rain, its ... read more

Hi all I had a varied weekend, to say the least. On Saturday I went to a sort of nature reserve, in the middle of Tena. It was sort of part of the rainforest but all the trees had labels and their different properties. It was the hottest day yet, with clear blue skies. It was cool to walk round and Then I saw a small monkey and thought ´what a great picture opportunity!´so I kept still and it did eventually come close enough for a good picture. I then started to walk on and this monkey kept following me and started to get really annoying and freak me out a bit!!!! It was just me and the monkey and it was doing some very strange things. So I swiftly left the reserve, after about an ... read more

Hello there I had my first day at the school today and it seemed to go well. There are about 20 kids all about 5 years old. There is just the one teacher and two women that do the cooking. I think i´m understanding more of what everyone is generally saying but my response is generaly limited to, good, thank you, yes, no, very good, hello, goodbye, good day, and so obviously sentances are a thing for the next couple of months. I think I might look at doing some whitewater rafting this weekend for two specific reasons: 1. it will be cool and 2. it says in the guide book says the owner is english! Since coming to Tena from quito the altitude is significantly less so I haven´t had problems with that, I have ... read more

Day 22 - January 22 2008 - Tena, Ecuador No rest for the wicked - and after that pizza the previous evening ... (mmm .... pizza) ... we were up at 6am and headed for the jungle in Tena. Bus journeys no longer cause us panic and we are "travellers". It´s official. 5-6 hours on a bus to Tena. That´s one hell of a game of eye-spy (is that how you spell it? Or is it I-Spy?). We got there anyway - and we headed to Amarongachi Tours. First impressions: 1. The b******s got our bags dirty in the back of the non-luxury bus. And because we needed the toilet when we got there - this didn´t make us happy. 2. Tena seems fun - but our Mum´s wouldn´t like it. It´s a bit thrown together ... read more
